ABOUT XIANGQI: Xiangqi is an ancient Chinese board game. Now Xiangqi has been widely introduced to many places in the world. It is one of the five most popular mind sports games: Chess, Xiangqi, Go, Bridge and Draughts. The 1st World Mind Sports Games was held in 2008, and the Australian Women Xiangqi Team proudly won the silver medal in this world competition.

     

VALUE OF LEARNING XIANGQI: Xiangqi is similar to chess. Learning xiangqi is fun and easy. From playing this mind game, you will be able to enjoy the unique culture it has to offer and you will gain many social skills with different people. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN XIANGQI & CHESS



 

XIANGQI

CHESS

There is a river and palace on the board.

The is no river and palace.

Pieces are placed on the intersection point.

Pieces are placed in the square.

There are ninety points for pieces to stand on the board.

There are only sixty four squares for pieces to stand on the board.

Can only move one piece at a turn all the time. No Castling.

Can move two pieces in a turn, when it is castling.

The king can’t go out of the palace.

The king can move anywhere.

Can not perpetual check.

Can be perpetual, and it is one kind of tactic to draw.

Stalemate means lose.

Stalemate means draw. And it is one kind of tactic to be draw.

Rook is the strongest piece.

Queen is the strongest piece.

When the pawn goes down to the bottom rank, it is weaker.

When the pawn goes down to the bottom rank, it promotion to be other piece.

Horse can be block, if there is a piece in front of it.

Knight can jump over a piece which it is in front of it.

Cannon is a stronger piece, which moves like Rook but captures in a different way.

No Cannon on chess board.

There are seven kinds of piece.

There are six kinds of piece.

XIANGQI PIECES MOVE & CAPTURE

King

is the most important piece. If the King be captured, it means has lost the game. King move one step horizontally or vertically, and stay inside the Palace. Two Kings can’t face one another on the same file without other pieces between them.

The King captures in the same way as they move.

Rook

is the most powerful piece. It moves along the ranks and files on the board. Rook capture in the same way as they move.

Pawn 

before cross the river,it only move one step forward.Once they have crossed the river, they can move forward and side way. Pawn is not allowed to go back. Pawn capture in the same way as they move.

Cannon 

moves in the same way as Rook do, it along the files and ranks. But Cannon captures are different, they need hop over one piece to capture the next piece.

Adviser 

move one step diagonally and may not leave the palace. This effectively means they can only move to five of the points within the palace. They serve to protect the King.

The Adviser capture in the same way as they move.

Elephant

move exactly two steps diagonally and may not jump over intervening pieces. They may not cross the river, thus they serve as defensive pieces. There are only seven points on the board for elephant to move. The Elephant capture in the same way as they move.

Horse

moves one point vertically or horizontally and then one point diagonally away from its former position. It is important to note that the horse does not jump, if there were a piece lying on a point one point away horizontally or vertically from the horse, then the horse’s path of movement is blocked and it is unable to move in that direction. The Horse capture in the same way as they move.

In Australia, we have a Xiangqi national open competition every year and also there are many local community Xiangqi activities are held from time to time. Players from Australia are very competitive and some of them have been grand honour of master or grand master.

Tutor Chen Song Shun taught xiangqi to the xiangqi class in "Ting Jin Primary School" in Guangzhou China. Irene Huang was one of the students there.
