5. My boss is breathing down my neck
6. ball park figure
7. iron out 解决
Yesterday I gave Tom a bell, wanting to follow up on the French project. Tom told me he would give Bill a ring and get back to me later. This morning Tom called and told me that he managed to contact Bill. “Don’t worry about the project, mate. It’s not a big deal” he said, “We’ll work out a solution to push Bill to speed up”.
When I asked Tom the ball park figure of the French project, he promised to check it out with Bill ASAP. Bill is planning to visit Yantai in August, and he told Tom the estimated time of arrival (ETA). We are likely to send a car to pick him up at the airport. When Bill arrives in Yantai, we’ll iron out all the deatails.
eg:'Instead of spending money on a
new TV, I'm going to save it for a rainy day. You never know when
you'll need it.'
'I bought my dad a new watch at a flea
market, and I thought I got a great deal only to discover they were
a dime a dozen at other places.'
Being a government employee like me, it is unlikely to have enough opportunity to practice my spoken English. Since I graduated from university, I have only met with no more than 10 foreign investors who can communicate with me in English through my work. So you can imagine my English, especially my oral English.
What did I do in the past? For a long time, I had kept complaining about my lack of opportunity and feeling desperate. After communicating with other English learners, I realized that the only chance to master English is to learn it by myself, and there are no other options.
So I decided to change and do something to me. I knew that I couldn’t rely on those foreign investors whom I met for the first time. Every time I encountered them, my job was being the interpreter of the senior government leaders. So they are not the right persons to practice my spoken English.
Occasionally I encountered Shawn Dickson, an American English teacher at Ludong University. He is very friendly and helpful. Regularly I came to visit him during his office hours. I got a large amount of time to speak with him in English. At the same time I became confident when speaking with foreigners.
After a long period of time, now I can speak English with Michel Hubert, the senior advisor in Yantai IDB. Although his English is not so good, I can still understand him and express what I want to say clearly. This is kind of progress for me, because I used to avoiding speaking with him in English.
Actually I am eager to meet with an American now and have a long conversation with him. I have made a lot of improvements and I want to practice what I learned and listened,
It proved to be an arduous process for me; I had to try every ways to endure the loneliness and failure. I chose to study English discreetly and didn’t want other people to know that I was learning English then.
I will continue my learning process in the future,
because English is part of my career planning. I am such a real
dragon that I won’t stay in the small pond like a fish. Someday I
will reach the top and be a successful man.
