World-famous Ancient Ruins: Babylon and its Hanging
Garden
Babylon is the ruins of a world famous ancient city and a
birthplace of civilization. Erected in some 2350 B.C. on the east
bank of Euphrates, 90 kilometres south of Baghdad, it is reputed to
be one of the world famous ancient relics and origins of
civilization for its long history, which is comparable to the
ancient China, India and Egypt. Babylon, literally meaning “Gate of
Heaven”, once served as a transport link and through continuous
expansion, she emerged into a site of strategic importance in the
Tigris-Euphrates valley. The period (2000-1000B.C.) saw her full
bloom when she remained on the throne as the most prosperous
political, economic and cultural centre in West Asia. And here lay
the capital of both the old and new Babylonian empire.
The ancient Babylon had majestic city walls and magnificent
palaces, displaying the architectural expertise
