Help, Parent Abuse in Progress!

(June 1990)

When the second grade class was assigned a research paper, our daughter picked “dolphins.” That was two weeks ago. Friday she announced that the paper was due on Monday and she wasn’t finished. She panicked.

Our oldest daughter, home from college, agreed to help. She guided the second grader through the rigors of research in the Encyclopedia Britannica, the World Book, and Dolphin Log, the newsletter of the Cousteau Society.

The second grader cooperated reluctantly, surly that she had to write this, her first research paper, at all. Our house was much disturbed by her moaning and other noises of a negative nature. She focused on the paper only when a powerful motivating force was brought into play.

Is There Life after Earth Day?

(May 1990)

The warm glow of Earth Day is over, and cold light of daily ecological commitment is upon me.

Up early with the cool morning breezes, I hear my neighbor’s sprinkler whooshing. It has been whooshing for days. I growl at his wastefulness.

As I take a cold shower I try to remember all the Earth Day resolutions I made. Cold water is part of environmentally responsible showering, but my shivering cuts off morning meditations.

Breakfast time. Toast or bread? Cold-pressed coffee or fresh perk

The ritual reading of the Sunday newspaper, now two of them, can take all morning, still beginning with the funnies. I am also the chef for the family’s traditional Sunday breakfast. For twenty years I have prepared a steady supply of Dad’s special Sunday pancakes topped with melted butter and yogurt and fruit and pure grade A amber maple syrup, not ersatz. Plus thick-sliced, home-smoked bacon. Plus freshly squeezed orange juice and fresh ground coffee. The family’s mouths water every Sunday morning like Pavolv’s dogs. So does mine. How can I stop now?

I can. These days the little Coyotes are now quire big, and love to sleep late. For them, Saturday night has eclipsed Sunday morning in ritual importance. Breakfast is now brunch. Great. I can sneak out.

I almost made it two weeks ago. Havin

Coyote Goes Round the Bend

(December 1989)

At forty-five years old, I am halfway round my allotted planetary circuit, more or less. If I get Alzheimer’s, I hope it will be less. If I get wisdom, I hope it will be more.

At this point on my circuit, I notice my priorities changing. No, not really cha

Block Parties: A “How To” Guide

(September 1989)

As I strolled through the neighborhood returning from a Sunday evening run, I was thinking about how burned out I was from a long workweek. And how much of a pleasure it would be to get home and fix dinner and relax with the paper, which I had not yet read, and perhaps watch 60 minutes, and then maybe make a few fund-raising phone calls for a non-profit organization. I was savoring the gift of peace and quiet conferred on me by the absence of Mrs. Coyote and all the Little Coyotes, who were visiting family out of town.

A block from the house, I spied a neighborhood friend sitting on the screened porch of her house reading a book. I hadn’t talked

Deer Tales

( June 1987)

According to local Park Center Rat Paul Jaeger, the sign and spoor and scat of deer have been around our urban neighborhood all winter. Cross-country have reported quantities of two-toed deer tracks around the island in Lake of Isles. Paul’s brother a doe with two fawns on the north side of Cedar Lake, next to the railway tracks near downtown.

But nothing prepared Paul for last December. Here’s the story he told.

About 9 p.m., Paul left his house right behind Kenwood School. As he drove past the intersection between the sch

The battle of the curbs

(November 1988)

This is a story of light over darkness. Of hope over despair. Of the individual over bureaucracy. Of neighborhood over city. Of air over asphalt.

It includes a bare-knuckled conflict between the industrial powers of The Machine and the ancient weapons of a woman who waters her flowers.

It is the Battle of the Curbs, and I am pleased to be its Homer.

This year our neighborhood transpor

The Sounds of Silence

(May 1989)

I bought a new car. Not only was my old one was coughing to death, but I liked the stereo in the new one. No, scratch that, I loved the stereo. It is a fundamental truth of American males that they cannot resist foxy stereos.

My attraction to high tech electron
