The Yangtze River is the third longest river in the world, with a total length of 3,915 miles (6,300 kilometers). It is also the longest river in Asia. People have lived along the river for thousands of years, farming, fishing and building homes for their families. Most residents in the area are not wealthy, but like people all over the world, they love their homeland. However, the situation of around two million people living in the Three Gorges area of the river is about to change dramatically.
In response to a massive energy shortage, the Chinese government is in the process of building the world's largest dam on the river. It will harness the energy of the Yangtze River water for people downstream, and widen the passageways for ships and barges carrying goods and supplies. The dam will not only be the largest ever to be built, but will also be the most expensive, and many

In a monarchy a king or queen is the absolute ruler of the country.  In some countries today there is a monarch, but the king or queen is more of a figure head rather than a person with absolute sovereignty.
