在美国这样的西方发达国家，每8位妇女当中就有一位在其一生中会患上乳腺癌。看到我在《寻找失去的乳房》中引用的这个数据时，广州总部两位女同事非常惊讶。

   事实如此。美国的乳腺癌发病率为130/10万，即每10万美国妇女中每年新增约130名乳腺癌患者。这是“1：8”的出处。但女性不用为此太过紧张，因为“1：8”是按照美国女性平均活到85岁来算的。年龄越大，患癌症的几率当然越高，见下表：

   中国乳腺癌的发病率没有美国那么高。天津、北京和上海的肿瘤流行病学家分别统计出了各自城市的数据：天津低于30/10万，北京高于40/10万，上海超过60/10万。即使是发病率最高的上海，也还不到美国平均水平的一半。

   女同事问我，怎样可以预防乳腺癌。我的回答是：早生孩子。

   现在的女孩子初潮平均年龄已经提前到了11岁，而且很多人30岁以后才生孩子。大量雌激素的分泌会促使乳腺增生，从而增加乳腺癌风险。

   第二个有效的预防办法是：绝经以后避免肥胖。

 

   很多女性可能听说过一种说法，戴胸罩，尤其是带金属托的胸罩否增加乳腺癌风险。国内一些网站上说得有板有眼的：美国夏威夷文明病研究所通过调查5000多位女性发现，每天戴乳罩超过12个小时的女人，患乳腺癌的可能性比短时间或根本不戴乳罩的人高出20倍以上。

   该说法源自一本书：Dressed to Kill: The Link Between Breast Cancer and Bras, 1995，作者为Institute for the Study of Culturogenic Disease的Sydney Singer和Soma Grismaijer。

   美国癌症协会网站则称这种说法为谣言，因为两位作者的研究不符合流行病学研究的标准，其数据不可信：

This email rumor states that wearing a bra for the whole day compacts the lymphatic system of the breast and causes breast cancer. It refers to a book written by a husband and wife team of medical anthropologists that cites evidence that ". . . these restrictive, seductive harnesses and enhancers should be gotten rid of."

There are no scientifically valid studies that show a correlation between wearing bras of any type and the occurrence of breast cancer. Two anthropologists made this association in a book called Dressed to Kill. Their study was not conducted according to standard principles of epidemiological research and did not take into consideration other variables, including known risk factors for breast cancer. There is no other, credible research to validate this claim in any way.
