Overview
Hammertoes is foot deformity that typically affects second,
third or fourth toes. The condition is called hammertoe because of
the unnatural position your toes form. Hammertoe causes your toe to
bend upward at the middle joint in a way that looks similar to a
hammer. While it may not be painful at first, this condition
usually worsens with time and it becomes difficult to extend your
toes. Sometimes, calluses or corns form in association with
hammertoe.
Causes
As described above, the main reason people develop hammertoes is
improper footwear, or footwear that is too short for the toes.
Shoes that do not allow our toes to lie flat are the biggest cause
of hammertoes, t

A bunion is a firm,
painful bump that forms over a bony bulge at the base of the big
toe. In most cases, the big toe joint also is enlarged and has
degenerative arthritis. The toe also may be pushed toward the
second toe (hallux valgus). Bunions tend to be inherited, but they
also are common in the following groups. Women who wear high heels.
People who wear shoes that are too narrow or too pointed. People
with flatfeet. All of these situations force the big toe to drift
toward the little toes, and this can cause bunions to form.
Causes
With prolonged wearing of constraining footwear your toes will
adapt to the new position and lead to the deformity we know as a
foot bunion. Footwear is not the only cause of a bunion. Injuries
to the foot can also be a factor in developing a bu
Overview
Ligaments in the foot hold the muscle and bone structure in its
arch shape, additionally supported by sinewy tissue. When these
ligaments are torn, or when the bones are fractured, arch pain can
be caused the by the incongruity of the interactivity of these
different foot structures. Pain is the primary symptom of arch
injuries, as well as general foot tenderness and increased
difficulty in walking, running, and other otherwise normal foot
movements.
Causes
There are many different factors that can cause arch pain. A
structural imbalance or an injury to the foot can often be the
direct cause. However, most frequently the cause is a common
condition called plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a broad
band of fibrous tissue located along the bottom surface of t

Overview
Plantar fasciitis continues to be widely used for the clinical
syndrome of undersurface heel pain. However, the use of 'itis'
denotes an inflammatory disorder. This is a misnomer as the
pathology is not the result of excessive inflammation. Pathological
changes are degenerative (but partially reversible) in nature,
probably due to repetitive trauma. The plantar fascia is a thick,
fibrous band of connective tissue. Its origin is the medial plantar
tubercle of the calcaneum. It runs along the sole of the foot like
a fan, being attached at its other end to the base of each of the
toes. It is a tough, resilient structure that has a number of
critical functions during running and walking. It stabilises the
metatarsal joints during impact with the ground. It acts as a shock
absorber for the entire leg. It forms the longitudinal arch of the
foot and helps to lift the arch to prepare it for the 'take-off'
phase of the gait cycle.
Overview
Plantar fasciitis refers to an inflammation of the plantar fascia,
a thick, fibrous band running along the sole of the foot. Such
inflammation results from direct injury to the plantar fascia,
usually, repeated trauma to the tissue where the fascia attaches to
the calcaneus or heel bone. The plantar fascia is critical in
maintaining the foot?s complex arch system, also playing a role in
balance and fine control of certain phases of the athlete?s gait.
Injury to the plantar fascia is particularly painful and disabling
for runners and can often prove stubbornly resistant to treatment.
Rehabilitation is frequently a lengthy and frustrating process. For
these reasons, care should be taken where possible to avoid such
injury by means of preventative exercises and sensitivity to early
warning signs.
While it is very positive that clinical trials are taking place in
this area, it is vital that trials are based on appropriately
selected patients and carefully chosen outcome measures,' says
Associate Professor Joshua Burns, Chief Investigator from the
University of Sydney and The Children's Hospital at Westmead. 'This
relies on being able to measure disease severity accurately, and in
turn the patient's response to treatment, which we were previously
unable to do in children.' Furthermore, it is during childhood that
we anticipate that treatments for CMT may be most effective -
before the disease progresses and makes repair more difficult.'

Foot and back pain is not something that is fun to deal with and
orthotics can help ease many conditions that cause pain. If you are
on your feet all day, it can cause pain in your feet and your back.
The activity you do when playing sports including running and
jumping can cause pain and discomfort. Finding something that will
ease the pain allows you to continue your usual activities. You
will be able to enjoy anything you do when you are not suffering
with foot or back pain. Insoles for shoes are made that can help
ease your pain. Flat feet (pes planus) are very common across a
broad range of people. The strain placed on the foot and body due
to the flatness of the feet can cause numerous foot problems.
Unfortunately, the necessary use of shoes at an early age to
protect our feet does not allow those with flat feet to develop the
muscular and structural adjustment needed to function better. The
result are feet that need added structural support to prevent
tendon and ligament strain,
