Hammer ToeOverview
Hammertoe (hammertoe) is a deformity of the second, third, or fourth toes. In this condition, the toe is bent at the middle joint, into an upward position, causing it to resemble a hammer (sometimes decribed as ?curled toes?). Left untreated, hammer toes can become inflexible and require surgery. Toes which take on a curled appearance are hammer toes. Mallet toe is a similar condition, but affects the upper joint of a toe.

Causes
Hammertoes are more commonly seen in women than men, due to the shoe styles women frequently wear: shoes with tight toe boxes and high heels. Genetics plays a role in some cases of hammertoes, as does trauma, infection, arthritis, and certa

Bunion Pain A foot bunion is a common cause of foot pain caused by deformity of one of the toe bones. They most commonly affect the big toe, known as hallux abducto valgus, but can also affect the little toe, known as a bunionette. The classic presentation is a large bump on the outer side of the big toe that is red, swollen and painful caused by the toe deviating across towards the second toe. Left untreated, the condition usually gets gradually worse, so it is important to get treatment early on else you may end up needing bunion surgery.

Causes
Women traditionally have a higher rate of bunions, which is to be expected, since it is they who have traditionally worn shoes with high heels, a narrow toe box, or whatever fashion dictates from year to year. However, men can suffer from bunions as well, as can anyone f

Overview Achilles Tendinitis The largest tendon in the body, the Achilles tendon is a cord connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. Also called the cord of Achilles, the tendon gets its name from the hero of Greek myth. According to legend, Achilles was invulnerable everywhere but his heel, where a poisoned arrow eventually felled him. Because the blood supply to the Achilles tendon lessens with age, the tendon becomes vulnerable to inflammation and rupture, a fact which makes it a true Achilles heel for many older patients. Achilles tendon injuries are also common among athletes and those who engage in more physically demanding activity. Causes A rupture occurs when a patient overstretches the Achilles tendon, an act which causes it to tear partially or completely. Achilles t

Most sandal wearers complain about calluses being the most unsightly part of their foot. Calluses can be found on the top of your foot where a favorite pair of shoes rubs or most commonly on the heels. These are fairly simple to soften, but it takes a little preparation. Check out your local drug store to find a Callus softener. Dr. Scholl's offers a corn and callus remover that comes in a small bottle; you use the installed 'eye dropper' top to cover your corns or calluses for removal. This will ensure that your feet will be callus free at the start of the really hot weather. Callus formation is also commonly encountered due to some collagen changes in the skin, bony prominences from changes in the feet structure or just the gait (walking) pattern of the feet. It is recommended that care should be utilized to decrease pressure by wearing correct shoegear, adjusting insoles through orthotics and/or trimming of calluses if they become increased in thickness. Some lotions may also help,

Foot health and shoe comfort are critical factors for a runner. Shoes that curl your toes can cause pain, corns, blisters and calluses. Toe curling can result from anatomical imbalances, muscle or bone weaknesses or shoe deficiencies. Poor-fitting, worn and unsupportive running shoes can exacerbate problems with your feet. To prevent toe curling, wear a shoe that fits properly and provides space for toe movement. Size of Shoes To help prevent hammertoe, wear roomy, low-heeled shoes that allow plenty of width and length for the toes. The Mayo Clinic recommends wearing shoes that have at least 1/2 inch of space between the shoe and the longest toe. Expert Insight Help your aching feet get back to happy feet. Don’t stop searching until you’ve found the best solution for you. With only one pair of feet, and replacement not an option – it’s important to listen to your body and take good care your ankles, arches and toes. It’s never too late to gain the benefits of improved wellnes

A heel spur is basically attributed to the anatomical changes in the heel bone. These are brought on due to strain of the supporting structures of the feet. One of the most common causes of calcaneal spur syndrome is a condition called plantar fasciitis. This condition is associated with the inflammation of the plantar fascia, a tough ligament that runs across the bottom of the foot. The plantar fascia usually gets inflamed due to excessive strain on the feet. The body responds to the inflammation by forming a calcaneal spur. Most commonly, the plantar fascia is injured at its attachment point on the medial tubercle of the calcaneus. During running, the arch of the foot flattens during the pronation phase, allowing the foot to absorb shock as it makes contact with the ground. Repetitive trauma to this tissue can produce micro tears, the signature of plantar fasciitis. Pain usually develops on the calcaneus of the foot. Massage the spur. Start gently with your thumb and gradually increa
