Wine consumption in South Korea was flat between 2006 and 2010, increasing by only 0.37% in the 5 years. In 2011, after a free trade agreement was signed between South Korea and the European Union, wine consumption in the Asian nation grew by 8.4% compared to 2010.
The VINEXPO world market survey forecasts that this return to growth will be sustained between 2011 and 2015 to reach 26.44% by the end of the 5-year period.
South Korea today is the third largest Asian wine market after China and Japan. Each Korean adult drinks an average of 2.7 litres of wine annually. (Vinexpo – 7 February 2012)

I can understand keeping a bottle as a trophy from a particularly special vintage or grower, but I have no inclination to start a collection of empties. Taking in the opinion of 120 leading fine wine merchants, auction houses and investment fund managers in Asia, Europe and the Americas, the survey shows an overcorrection in the second half of last year has led to attractive opportunities for buyers.

The Fine Wine Market Outlook 2012 is a joint report by journalist-based intelligence service Wealthmonitor and online magazine Wine Yields.

Just under 60% of respondents said they expected the fine wine market to increase in value over the year, with most expecting gains of 10%.

The Aquitaine and Midi Pyrennees regions of France have decided to promote their agricultural products under the common heading 'Sud Ouest' (South West).

 

However, for some of the regional wine marketing boards concerned, this initiative should not result in a new 'brand' of south west wines.
