Recently I met with some former Pakistani colleagues and friends on internet. I was informed that ZonG was undergoing a lot of changes. Many staffs resigned, including Hammad Yasir, Hamid Butt, Fiaz Ahmed, Saleem Hashmi, Qadir Ali, Usman Bali from CII and our Chinese chef Mr. Li, who is back in China now. May Allah blesses them.

It is obvious that more things need to be done than localization.

To be honest, I am a firm supporter of localization. I remembered that since the beginning of my work in CII, I had clarified this idea to my Pakistani colleagues. My vision was that the company could not survive without support from the local staffs. At the same time, I also believed Chinese staffs could make contributions to the company in the fields of corporate governance, supervision, technology support, experience exchange, culture merging. The key was we need to define the roles of both staffs correctly and clearly by utilizing their respective advantages. Besides this, we

Poster of  “Planet Earth”

Recently I watched some very good documental videos, all of which could be downloaded from internet. They are products of big names, such as BBC, Discovery, National Geographic, PBS and so on. Followings are the ones I strongly recommend:

1.      “Planet Earth”, a masterpiece of BBC, is a series including 11 episodes. In each episode, the video describes one kind of geographic character of our earth and its ecosystem, such as fresh water, mountains, caves, deserts, ice world. “A definitive look at the diversity of our planet”. The theme, photography, peculiar

Taiji Picture of Daoism

Recently I have been working in Fuqing, a town approximately 1 hour drive away from Fuzhou city. One evening, I passed by and visited a temple located in the center of the town. In China, we can see a lot of Buddhism temples everywhere. I remember that when I was in Pakistan, many Pakistanis asked me what the Chinese religion was. When I told them that we did not have religion and I am a communist, they always felt puzzled. In a country where religion is so important to the people, such answer of course is very disappointing. But this question is really very difficult to answer. Here I just try my bes

American congress rejected the government bailout plan. This is the shocking news across the world today. Dow Jones index plunged 777 point (nearly 7%), more than that caused by 9/11 disaster in 2001. Why the politician rejected the plan while so many economists believed it necessary for pulling American economy out of a recession? What will happen when economy vs. politics?

The main reason of the politician in the congress for rejection is that they believe it is unfair to save the main street in the way of using taxpayers money. And of course, a lot of American common people believe so. If there is only one or two banks fell, like Lehman, this is not the issue of government. The investors must take the responsibility for their own risks. But now the situation is far beyond this. The whole banking system is collapsing. If this happens, none of the American can avoid the catastrophe. This must be one big issue of government. Still why did the politician say no as they compreh

Pic: Lost Horizon by James Hilton

“Where is Shangri La”? Haunted by this question, I read the famous novel “Lost Horizon” by James Hilton. In this book, the hero Conway with the other 3 passengers accidentally came into a valley named Blue Moon at a place called Shangri La by a hijacked plane. The valley lied beneath a snowy mountain Karakal, which was described as tall as the Everest. This utopia society was isolated from the outside world geographically and intentionally. People led a moderate and tranquil life. Lamas governed the community. The unique environment of Shangri La made people living here nearly immortal th

Pic: In the Line of Fire: A Memoir

Few days ago I accomplished the reading of Pakistani former president Pervez Musharraf’s memoir: In the Line of Fire. The book was given to me by a friend when I worked in Pakistan. I did not read it at that time when he was still the President. Only 2 months after I was back from Pakistan, President Musharraf resigned suddenly. It was not completely out of my expectation but still shocking. This news also reminded me of this book, so I searched it out of my bookshelf and read it.

Picture: Marriot hotel after the nightmare (from sina.com)

This has been the headline of all the media since last night. A truck suicide bomber rammed the hotel and caused huge casualties and damages to the hotel on around 8 p.m. local time sept 20. I first got this shocking news at around 23:30 Beijing time through a report by CCTV. I immediately made phone calls to my old colleagues in Pakistan and got confirmed that all of them were ok. Thank God!

This morning according to the updated news, the toll has already rose up to 60, which I believe is the bloodiest one ever happened in Islamabad. The Marriott hotel, which used to be the haven of foreigners and one of the 2 on

Several weeks ago, my wife said to me: “You have not renewed your blog for a long time.” I replied: “Yeah. I have made it very clear this blog is devoted to my experience in Pakistan. Now my task has already been accomplished, so there is no reason to continue.” After this reply, I self-consciously asked myself: “Is it?”

Although I have been back from Pakistan for more than 3 months, I still recalled the life vividly and shared them with my families and friends often.

I received phone calls from my old Pakistani colleagues sometimes. We remembered the old time and shared updated information of our Zong. We also kept in touch through MSN.

I visited blogs of our colleagues to get some information of them. Although most of them stop continuing their blogs, fortunately, Mr. Ma and Mr. Suo are still very active.
