The United States as a Multicultural Society

The united states say that the United States is “a melting pot”, while others say it is “a salad platter.” In my view, rather than a melting pot, the United States today may be more accurately described as a multicultural society in which acculturation is defined more in terms of “integration” than “assimilation.” In other words, people in the United States today can maintain some original cultural identity and values and participate meaningfully in the larger society.

In 1757, Franklin went to London as an agent for the colony of Pennsylvania. He was later also colonial agent for Georgia, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. During these years abroad, he worked hard to bridge the developing division between England and his American colonies. He had always considered himself a loyal Englishman. Gradually, however, his sympathies became more and more American and less British, and his ideas favoring American independence became stronger.

Returning to Philadelphia in 1775 at the start of the American Revolution, Franklin worked tirelessly for the cause of independence. In 1776, he was appointed to the committee to help write the declaration of independence. Thomas Jefferson submitted the original draft to Franklin who made a few minor changes and gave it his approval.

Franklin was then sent to France to seek French aid for the Am

Emblem

The emblem resembles a person doing “taiji”, symbolizing gracefulness, harmony, vitality and mobility as well as unity, cooperation, exchange and development. It also resembles the shape of a traditional Chinese artifact known as the “china heart unit”. The logo expresses the Olympic spirit of “faster, higher and stronger”.

Motto: new Beijing, great Olympics

Reform and opening up to the outside world have brought about great changes in Beijing. A city with a 3,000-year history. The city has taken on a completely new look as if enters the new century. It will embrace the athletes and friends from the rest of the world attending the Olympic games with great enthusiasm.

The great modern Olympic movement has gone through many changes in the past 100 years. Should the Olympic game be held in china, the most populous nation in the world, the Olympic spirit will be even further disseminated and a

In spite of this difficult economic, political and social  environment, sport, I am certain, will remain popular and continue to impart its beneficial educational values to young people. But to maintain this eminent role for sport, we have to meet various challenges. Sport will have a social value and can transmit its own values only if it respects the rules of ethics and retains a humanist dimension. We must continue to fight fiercely against doping.

Sport is a formidable educational tool for young people. It strengthens the body and mind; it inculcates a sense of community; it teaches respect for authority and refereeing decisions; it offers health, identity and hope. It integrates minorities into society. For these values alone, it deserves the support of society. Sport nonetheless also has a higher dimension derived from values and ethics, which transcends its social relevance. Sp

It is commonly believed in the United States that school is where people go to get an education. Nevertheless, it has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and education implied by this remark is important.

Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no bounds. It can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or in the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a revered grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a child to a dis

It is simple enough to say that since books have classes——fiction, biography, poetry——we should separate them and take from each what it is right that each should give us. Yet few people ask from books what books can give us. Most commonly, we come to books with blurred and divided minds, asking of fiction that it shall be true, of poetry that it shall be false, of biography that it shall be flattering, of history that it shall enforce our own prejudices. If we could banish all such preconceptions when we read, that would be an admirable beginning. Do not dictate to your author; try to become him. Be his fellow worker and accomplice. If you hang back, and reserve and criticize at first, you are preventing yourself from getting the fullest possible value from what you read. But if you open up you mind as widely as possibly, then sighs and hints of almost imperceptible fineness, from the twist and turn of the first sentences, will bring you in

The language of music

A painter hangs his or her finished picture on a wall, and everyone can see it. A composer writes a work, but no one can hear it until it is performed. Professional singers and players have great responsibilities, for the composer is utterly dependent on them. A student of music needs as long and as arduous a training to become a performer as a medical student needs to become a doctor. Most training is concerned with technique, for musicians have to have the muscular proficiency of an athlete or a ballet dancer. Singers practice breathing every day, as their vocal chords would be inadequate without controlled muscular support. String players practice moving the fingers of the left hand up and down, while drawing the bow to and fro with the right arm——two entirely different movements.

The Rewards of Living a Solitary Life

For me the most interesting thing about a solitary life, and mine has been that for the last twenty years, is that it becomes increasingly rewarding. When I can wake up and watch the sun-rise over the ocean, as I do most days, and know that I have an entire day ahead, uninterrupted, in which to write a few pages, take a walk with my dog, read and listen to music, I am flooded with happiness.
