Dear editor,

I am a freshman of English major. Lately I encountered many problems concerning English learning.

When I were in Middle School, I thought I were fairly good at English. That's why I decided to choose English as my major. However, when I became an English major student, I suddenly find my English is so poor that I can't understand what my teacher is saying and can't answer questions accurately in class. I did badly in dictation as well. Things shouldn't be like this, so I started to recite words, phrases and sentence structures just as what I did in Middle School, and I also recited texts from my books. Unfortunately, it helped little.

I am wondering if I'm really suitable for English major, if I'm right to take English as my major.

I would feel very happy if  you could give me some advice on how to study English based on your

Dear editor:

Hello! I am Xiaoxiao and I have been reading English Weekly since my high school. I really appreciate your effort to help us with English learning. This time, I am writing to ask for your help.

I come from a small county and now am studying in a university in Beijing. Recently I noticed that one of my friends, on one hand, always borrowed money from others, but on the other hand, she always came back to our apartment with lots of new clothes. I felt very curious about this and I asked her what happened.

'I like shopping very much and I like to buy brands a lot. However, I am short of money these days, so I have to borrow to shop,' she said. I replied, 'You are living beyond your means. You need to have more self-control.''My idea of consumption is to spend money on brands no matter how expensive it is. So that I can look mu

Happiness  幸福感(2009-06-12 15:28)
Dear editor:
Recently there is a popular word mentioned everywhere: 幸福感. (In my opinion, 幸福感 should be translated into 'happiness'.) And people began to measure their life by so-called happiness index. But what is exactly happiness?
Yesterday,I listened to Hitfm (88.7, a very good program) onlline. The two hosts were talking about happiness, like How can people feel happy? When can they feel happy? What kind of things can make them feel happy?...And then I began to think about where does my happiness come from, but I couldn't find the answer. To make it straight, I don't feel happy at all now.

Recently there has been a hot discussion concerning a terrible accident. A bus with air-conditioning in Chengdu burned, which caused 27 dead and 76 hurt(including 8 still in danger of losing their life). The government's quick response gave us some confidence, but later they began to find excuses for themselves. First, they found hammers. Second, they said it was all due to a person who carried petrol with him or her. More funny, the one who carried petrol died in the accident. Then, Shenyang's Communications Bureau released one regulation: no buses with air-conditioning any more and people with liquid-like things cannot get onto buses.

In fact, we can see that from the moment the accident happened, the government hasn't

What is Love?
I don't think there is an exact definition for love. After all, every person is experiencing or has experienced their own love. That's to say, how to understand love varies from person to person.
For me, Love is a moment feeling. When you feel different toward a guy at the first sight, that means you have a crush on him. It's just like click, or you can call it first sight love. I don't believe the theory that you'll fall in love with a guy as time goes by. In my eyes, it doesn't take too long before love turns into liability, responsibility and kinship.
When someone asks you' what're you seeing in him?', you cannot tell definitely what in him attracts you. Congratulations, you love the guy. Whatever he says, you'll be so listening to that and feel that he's stupidly charming.
Once this serious relationshiop ends, it's just like ripping your heart out, and leaving you there to bleed. You cannot focus on y

Dear friends:

I am a freshman of Shanxi University. I feel very excited to become a college student because I have much free time to do what I like. I just can enjoy my college life freely, no more hard work like in senior high school.

One day, one of my roommates talked with me about her plan in college. She aimed to go abroad after graduation, so she planed to study her profession courses even harder and spend more time on English. In her spare time, she planed to visit foreign universities'exhibitions as many as possible. She planed to have a full and meaningful college life.

I am confused a little bit now. What should I do? Should I make a plan as well in order to have a bright future? Should I just enjoy myself in college?

     Looking forward to your answers.

     Best wishes.

university students innovative undertaking

During May Day vacation, I went home from Beijing to Taiyuan to

see my parents. On the train, I talked with two boys seated

opposite to me. They just purchased some small decorations, like

clock, music box, bracelets etc. from a famous wholesale market

in Beijing where I am studing. Now they are back to Taiyuan where

my hometown is. After communication, I know they have opened a

chain shop in their college campus. They just purchased

merchandise for their shop during this vacation. One of the boy

is the manager of the shop. They are both junior at a technical

college in Taiyuan. I asked them whether they have energy to

operate their shop with heavy study. Both of them answered yes.

And the success of the business gains them both money and

confidence.  They even planed to open another shop out of their

campus.
I admired them much! The

人生不如意,十有八九.我们总是抱怨工作太辛苦,生活太单调,学习太乏味......

如果21天不抱怨,你的人生将会改变,相信吗?

Are ya kidding me?! No complaints for 21 days!

We all complain, right? It’s just human nature. But nowadays a no-complaints campaign spread abround the globe. Will Bowen, the pastor of a Kansas City church and the author of a book entitled A Complaint Free World told people in his congregation he wanted them to break the habit of complaint. People who join in are issued little purple bracelets as a reminder of their pledge. If they catch themselves complaining, they’re supposed to take off the bracelet, switch it to the opposite wrist and start counting the days from scratch till 21 days. And now the campaign has mushroomed.

But I don't agree, if we don't complain, we just accept whatever we confronted, then how the society could improve. You know, the world changed and improved to be more advanced and perfect

Is study useless!(2009-03-31 16:18)

These days in our campus, a topic is overwhelming--study is useless. It starts from a junior of a college from Chongqing city, he quit from his school.
Sometimes I agree with him. College education cost too much to the family especially from the poor countryside. Most importantly, we cannot find a job after graduation, let alone the well-paid job.
And the teacher's quality is worse and worse. There is no attraction to the students. Some of us choose skipping the classes to spend the college life.
I have no confidence with college education and my future.
Is it really useless? I am puzzled!

信息爆炸的今天,我们的学子却掀起了新一轮的读书无用论,因为家贫,因为工作难找,因为前路迷茫...,你呢?

Let's go dutch(2009-03-24 10:32)

Dear Sir,

I am a college student. My girlfriend always complains that I didn't love her much. She said I am stingy. I know what she means.

I am living in a poor family. My parents have spent all what they have to support my college life. I cannot ask more money from them for my girlfriend. She complains that we share the bills when watching movies and having meals. Why should the boy pay the bill every time? Everybody is indepentant, and we should support ourselves. If this is the rule to measure whether we love or not, I think that's wrong. That isn't love.

Go dutch! I like this way!
