New Library of Sichuan Art College, Designed by Tang Hua

Yesterday Mr. Xu Li asked me leading him to visit some architectures worth to visit in Chongqing. After one hour bus, we arrived the new campus of Sichuan Arts College, where, I personally thought, is the any place whose buildings can be called as architectures.

It has been one year since my last visit in Sichuan Arts College. There are some new architectures built or almost done in the new campus within this year. The new campus of Sichuan Arts College is surrounded with an eerie atmosphere, abounding with jowar cropland, strange sculptures along the road, knolls ranging one by one breaking the road into a stagger way. That means you as a visitor can’t grasp the landscape for the first glimpse, as if that the owner of this land was declaring an isolation from the exotic people. Indeed, they did be isolated by the boring city and daily life, didn’t they? Mr. Xu and I was shuttling through at the cropland, and amazingly, we found some original cottage concealing behind a cluster of bamboo. What a countryside scenery, peacefully and extraordinarily contrasting with a urban landscape which is only 200 meters far away from here.

This land is totally permeated by original countryside landscape, not vividly but desolately. As the urban sprawl, a lot of peasants abandoned their cropland and become building-workers, the building-workers who have been building the architecture which never belong to them onto their own cropland. Lost peasants, the crops lost the original essence of existence, and become landscapes and symbols, through which the new owners, who are as the same isolated as the peasants by the economy-oriented and efficiency-oriented era, can, express their attitude.

Mr. Xu Li told me he is a anti-urbanist, although he is a chief publisher of a architecture magazine. He was obsessed with the cottage presenting in the campus very much. So was I. But I am also obsessed with the huge elaborated artifact. Behind the cottage, over the jungle, a huge architecture stands there, lonely, tranquilly but powerfully, contrasting with not only the desolate landscape but also the ablare city. It is the library of the college designed by a famed Chinese architect Tang Hua. I was really captivated by the scenery, so solemn and magnificent. Mr. Xu Li had been shocked at that moment, but after a while, he come back to calmness, and he can’t imagine that this building saturated with power is designed by Tang Hua, because this architect in his eyes is so humble and peaceful. I explained to him that actually Tang is a metaphysician, and maybe through all his work he wants to express the reverence to divinity, that is in accordance with humility, and the aspiration to the super-mentality, that is in accordance with peace.

When we stand at the entrance space of the library, we are half surround by the huge eave, so, looking up to the welkin, we can see a half nature welkin constructed by sky, and another half is an artificial welkin constructed by concrete. Mr. Xu Li compared the two welkins, and said he has usually been moved by the grandeur of nature, because, as he said, according to the creation of nature, the individual life is insignificant, so it is really ridiculous that people have been hierarchized into different ranks, and he thought when he stand under the sky, he can feel exactly that the implication of the nature indicate the equality of Human-beings and all lives; but in the contrary, the artificial welkin, it indicate an overview gesture of rule and dominion whose fascination dose can attract people, as the consequence is devastating authoritarianism. Indeed according to human history, these kind of artificial spaces were always aligned with authoritarianism, from the alignment of ancient Rome and Colosseum to the Dome of Nazis, and the apotheosis to power have been concreting to spaces era after era. Mr. Xu Li ask me skeptically whether I am a latent authoritarianist. I answered not, and the any reason I was obsessed with these kinds of spaces is when I stood under this space, I feel I am just a mortal, and I believe that if every one feel themselves as a mortal, it is another way to approach equality.

We climbed to the top floor of the library. There is a platform over there. We can have a rest for a while. Leaning to the baluster and over viewing to the spectacular landscape, Mr. xu and I kept discussing about the interrelationship between power and space. Mr. Xu points me to look at the scenery of downstairs and said:” it is beautiful, right? Maybe the beautiful scenery is the reason that people chase power. I will be fascinated by this kind of feeling, and also be captivated by the huge magnificent architecture too, but my rational sense tell me I can’t do that, because if I don’t want to be ruled by other I will never rule others. So the most ideal world is like that…” he points at that cottage which we had just visited,” people lived here, like many ancient Chinese, are sustainable with the nature, and they taught their children with manner and traditional culture by explaining in words or communicating with hearts. That people enlightened themselves domestically, maybe it is a good way to keep traditional culture.”

After the words of Mr. Xu, I suddenly realized that what is most concerned by both of us is enlightenment. Maybe Mr. Xu’s approach is back to the countryside enlighten people domestically as the ancient chinese, while mine is to enlighten ourselves individually by using fundamental rationalism. Actually, I insist the enlightenment of self-consciousness is the only way to approach the boundary of human knowledge, beyond which there is the existence of deity where human can never arrive but just see. As other ancient subject, such as Mathematics, Geometry and Philosophy, Architecture, I personally thought, is a path to comprehend the deity. But it requires architects as the lot of us mortals enlighten ourselves by using rationalism and self-discipline, just liking what Louis I. Kahn had been doing.

At that moment, when I retrospect to the building, the death of Louis I. Kahn presents into my eyes. Louis I. Kahn is such an architect, through his work as if I can comprehend the existence of deity, because his work is so brilliant that I can’t believe it is built for the mortals. But what is more ironic is most of Kahn’s brilliant work was finally used by autarchy who thought themselves as deity. I guess this is the most grieved thing that a man who requires himself self-discipline dedicate all his life to deity but eventually found his endeavor was utilized by devil. Maybe this is just about the tragic destiny of architects. Kahn died at a lavatory in a train station, miserably and poorly, when he is in his return from Dacca where he went to for withdrawing his remuneration of design.

My mother called me today asking me whether everythings went ok or not, such as my physical condition, my spiritual condition, my study and research condition. My answer is all the same, indifferently, since I leaved home 9 years ago, that I am fine or it is OK, don't worry. But it seems that this kind of response did not satisfied her, she kept asking some details, as if through which she can imagine what I was doing and what I was thinking about. Although I deeply realized my mother's tootle is just because she love and be concerned about me very much, I still got impatient as a lot of young man's impatience towards eldership's tootle. I have to apologize for that now, and regret very much.

Last year, I quited from my job as a college teacher, and determined to go abroad for my further study. That decision made my parents a little bit angry, but ultimately they respected my chioce. From that time I re-picked my English learning which had been abandoned for almost 7 years. My parents worried about my English study wery much, because they know I never do very well in that subject since my secondary school study, and they are unsure whether I, a person who never check out at various English examination even in the youth age, can cope with it. They never told me their incertitude but just encourage me. To support my study, my parents always thought they should do someting for me, which just like a lot of other parent thoughted they should supply their child with special diet during the preparative time of college-enter-examination. And in my parents' opinion, this term, my english exam is more important than college-enter-exame. So that, they thought I am living in a hard time, with hard working and terrible food. I guess all the image conerned about me in my parents' eyes is that I am collapsed, tired and exhausted.

At the end of that call, my mother said maybe she should go to my apartment to take care my daily life. before I said it is not necessary, she hang up telephone and immediately took up a bus runing to my flat. I guess she predetermined it before call me, because after 2 hour bus she come in my house with prepared nut, food and various household commodity, most of which was and only can be prepared by herself. My mother decided living with me for days!

This is my food cooked by my mother, can you believe that it is cooked only with a rice cooker, which is the only cooking tool in my house. Food is very testy and nutritional!

thank you, my mother. I d like to write a article with a child style, because you take care of me as a child. that is 'I love you mom, and thank you for you love. I will good good study day day up!'

So, from now on, I will study untill I am really collapsed, tired and exhausted.

My best friends, Wang Wei and Xing Yingbo got married at their repective age of 27 and 28.

Congratulations! Thereinafter, photographs captured from the most happy time.

Few days ago, Wang Wei graduated from Berlage Architecture Institute, and acquired his master degree. After that he flew back to China and immediately submerge into his marriage. Few days after his flight landing on the Pudong international airport, my friend--Wang Wei--this poor guy lend money from his parents to buy a new car for his new family, and organised a builder group to decorate their new home.

He found a job, to work for a big architecture group consortium, and design for capitalism in china. Things go faster than time! All the things which is implemental according to individual life take place in a short time. From now on, my friend Wang Wei is not any more a kid, not any more an exiled intellectual, not any more a young crazy. He will conduct as a really adult, a husband, a professional. although, he is still a virtuous guy,a intelligent guy, a guy with critical spirit and justice consiousness.

Congratulations, my dear intimate friend. I'd like to celebrate, and also i d like to say you should live happily for your wife and your friends, and live carefully to avoid being assimilated by the middle class life style.

Discuss with Mr. Jing(2009-07-10 21:00)

Mr. Jing:
watched some news on the webset of TIME. it is some reports about the tragedy occured in Xinjiang province, which has mentioned the conflict between force and local people, as what you have mentioned. But that kind of conflict was the consequence of that contingency, not the reason of that.

and another question:
do you deem a nation is proper to a country?
it seems that the Europeans  care about that opinion very much, which can be seen from the word 'nation'. but it seems not very suited for china in the chinese opinion.
you know, from a historical view, settlement policies was adopted by governers even in the YUAN dynasty, when china was under the rule of a minority nation(you know I say that words without discrimination). and thanks to that policy, the comercial had been developed rapidly, and people tend to be less discriminating to each other, because any discriminations to the people who come from another ethnarch equals to discrimination to their own family. (I am not supporsed to advocate for the settlement policy, as which will arise to disappearance of special culture, but this problem is not the essence of our topic). So, what I want to say essentially, if Han chinese can suffer and live happily under the sway of a minority nation, and regard that effort of Mongolia empire as their own effort, treating an emperor as their own emperor, they (ancient chinese) might have no conception about notion but a country. Indeed, from the formation of society, I deem chinese people almost never separated their society into nations before modern time. How many Mongolians, obligated by the settlement policies, changed their motherland and pour into the south of China during YUN dynasty? They changed their custom from pasturage to agriculture, from roving to settling down. They was totally mingled with Han chinese and almost never come back to Siberian llano. Their offspring never tought themselfes as mogolianes or Han Chinese, not only because they are half-blooded but also they are separated into society ranks more than into nations. Ranks, in the ancient China, such as bureaucracy, landowner, peasant.
On the other hand, from a globalized view, Karl Max once wrote:'National differences and antagonism between peoples are more and more vanishing, owing to the development of bourgeoisie, to freedom of commerce, to the world market, to uniformity in the mode of production and in the condition of life corresponding thereto.' Today, the world is prcisely situated into the condition as Max had predicted. No matter who in which nation wheather believing which religion or not, they had to participate in economic competion to survive. In other words, according to globalization, people more and more was separated essentially by economic relationships than  by the nationality, religion faith, cuture background. So I am confused, under the might of globalization, why so many people are caring extremely about their own national status? It seems being contravenced with the demand of capitalism, which requires the world with less barriers and less borders. Can you explain that?
you know, and you always know, I am not a advocater for selfish Han-ism, and I am not a Populist. what I cannot understand is what is precisely the essence of nation meaning?  How the nationality plays an importent roll in today's world, even more importent than to respect lives.
by the way, I called a friend this afternoon. She is from XinJiang province. She told me something, and because what she told me is what her parents witnessed, so I believed that is not rumor but truth. She said 'indeed violence happend in earlier night. some uighus criminal start to kill Han chinese in some lanes stealthily, and the second day, i.e. july 5,largescale conflict was happened concequnentely '
I want you tought about it deeply and write back in english. first for communication, and also for studing.

Succession and Rupture

I insist that the establishment of People's Republic of China and the revolutions been consequent upon the establishment are the greatest movement in human history. But, what I mean great is not result from the accomplishment of that movement —actually, the revolutions are over of failure— but what the revolutions had created as a totally new experience of society reconstructed beside capitalism form. So, even there did be some kind of dissatisfaction about it, such as the tendency of authoritarianism and the catastrophe of culture revolution, but the fact is no more country bad been conducting like that conducted in China, and people in other country never had right as much as that of Chinese people which can participate the whole political life of their country. The conclusion is the revolutions happened in China is dramatical enough to absorb world’s eyesight, and is great enough to be reflected on. Despite of the dramaticalness and significance, Mao emphasized times without number that the Communism revolution led by him is some kind of extension of the democratic revolution led by Mr. Sun Zhongshan. So, even China has been dominated by two different Parties, the principle and objective that request of democracy and equal are successive.

Primary objectives internalized in Reform and Opening-up is, according to cosmopolitan environment, to improve productivity and to inherit engagement and ideal of Socialism. Deng once used vulgar words to represent his stable but frangible faith of socialism. What I mean frangible is not the weakness or unself-trust of Deng but that Deng was concerned whether that reform would deflect our country from socialism trajectory. Being afraid of any irrelevancy, Deng said: “we should use both hand to grip both mental civilization and material civilization, and both hand should be strong enough.” The material civilization is meant to promote productivity, while griping mental civilization means persistence the fundamental morality of socialism that civil moral self-conscious and responsibility of social con-construction.

In the other words, no matter the establishment of People's Republic of China or the Reform and Opening-up, both of these should be treated as a successive process after May 4 movement. What they are engaged in, no matter called revolutions or reform, is dedicated to a totally new society, the form of which is besides that of capitalism to which permanent exploitation is proper.

The situation was changed stealthily after 1989. Any attempt of reconstruction and doubt about polity was counted for mental un-liberation. People gradually aware that discussing polity is useless, and intellectuals were marginalized rapidly and stealthily. As the end of political argument, the subsequence is disappearance of Public Sphere, which incurs the unsteadiness of fundamental morality: civil moral self-conscious and responsibility of social con-construction. People lost superiority complex of socialized morality never care about common fate of our society, but concentrate to the way to enrich. Their life went extremely from one terminal to another, a politics life to a business life. Meanwhile, this transformation that life appealing for public sphere diverted to life appealing for individual material is encouraged intensely by potentate. In comparison with appearances of working model, the appearances of millionaire become more popular in television screen. Our society need new mouthpiece to be adapted for new ideology. In the same with transformation occurred to individual, dominators transferred their interesting from proposing political slogans to participating global commercial competition. From 1989 on, China, as a most magnitude impulse, not only attached herself to the process of Neoliberalism but also embraced Commercialism ideology, which, in Pierre Bourdieu’s opinion, would actually result in perpetual exploitation.

The transformed ideology implied a undoubted fact that the revolution occurred in the end of 1980s is a significant event which ruptured a successive process of Chinese socialism progress.

Years of 9

The years containing numeral 9, according to political fate of China, are always significant and dramatic. It was in 1919, May 4, New Culture Movement burst out from Peiking University. That movement participated by students and led by enlightened philosophers and progressional litterateurs had induced an very profound change in China. It has been hallowed as an initiatory genesis of democracy and freedom and justice. 30 years past that, a new country established in 1949. Thenceforth, People's Republic of China commenced the most dramatic and imaginative Socialism Progress over the world. A second 30 years past, it was in 1979, another political event occurred to China, which is called Reform and Opening-up. China embraced the whole world and become the main impulse of Globalization finally—as a socialism country. 10 years after that— all the same “year of 9” —another revolution broken out superficial calmness urgently. Thitherto, after oppression to those counter-revolutionists, China approached her new era, which we call it as harmonious era.

Yes, today, Chinese people lives in this kind of harmonious life. In comparison with the era of harmony, which implies stability and mediocrity, the era before 1989 seems abounded with turbulence and stimulus, which are proper to revolution. Suffering from a long-term pain of revolution, Chinese people need new life style more peaceful and rich, just as they had been promised by the leader at the initiation of Reform and Opening-up. As the mainstream of social ideology changed into commerce, Chinese people hate revolutions. I am not supposed to advocate for revolution. Actually any kind of incendiary article is not welcome in my opinion. What I want to say is we must recognize that what happened to China in 1989 is influencing our country and our daily life so deeply, which announced the end of an old era in human history.

It was in 1949, Mao stood on the Tianmen gate and declared divinely the end of old era and Chinese people had stood up thence on the world. And since 1979, we can see the image about development of our country from TV broadcasting day by day. We believe that a different era is emerged stealthily, and we did feel happy for that. Those two events conducting disappeared eras and emerged eras were deemed by many historians as the most important thing according to Chinese modern history, which changed fundamentally the hypostasis of Chinese society. While many historians tread the revolution happened in 1989 as a contingency during a whole progress of the Reform and Opening-up. But in my individual opinion, that “contingency” have split the history of modern China which is separated into Socialism China and Neoliberalism China, and the influence of that “contingency” maybe more profound than events happened in 1949 and 1979.

(to be continued)

Y`A`N`G ``J’I’A是死不足惜。 Y`A`N`G ``J’I’A确实杀了警察,那么按逻辑,分析就需要陈述杀警动机和定罪过程。 Y`A`N`G ``J’I’A的精神病史(因此可以依法免除死刑)而囚禁一个具有合法政治权力的公民——Y`A`N`G ``J’I’A的妈妈(以此避免对证明Y`A`N`G ``J’I’A袭警是处于精神不健康的状态提供有利证据。 Y`A`N`G ``J’I’A的妈妈的依法的“正当理由”正是断称其有精神病。)

Y`A`N`G ``J’I’A

Y`A`N`G ``J’I’A是何许人也?

Y`A`N`G ``J’I’A案得到社会关注并不是应为这些可疑,而是被报道出来袭警的超快速度。

Y`A`N`G ``J’I’A是某些人所认为的这一事件的结束,和不可更改的“事实”伴随着的“真相到来”。 Y`A`N`G ``J’I’A有利的线索? Y`A`N`G ``J’I’A妈妈关进精神病院的那帮人也是出于这种情感么? Y`A`N`G ``J’I’A的不是上海、也不是北京,而是高于上海北京的那个集团。 Y`A`N`G ``J’I’A的能力构成了对这一集团的严重威胁?

Y`A`N`G ``J’I’A是否真有杀过人。

Y`A`N`G ``J’I’A中的一个。
