Is
Criticism—Judging or finding fault with the ideas and actions of
others—essential for personal well-being and social
progress?
There
is a famous Chinese saying: criticism sounds harsh but works well.
However, in reality criticism is unfavorable for most of people and
nobody wants to be diminished by other people’s words. From my
perspective, criticism is quite beneficial for both individual and
society because it exposes or mirrors the other side of phenomenon,
which is usually invisible and unwelcoming. This view can be well
illustrated by Jane Jacob’s persistent criticism and objection to
the construction of expressway.

Rosa Park’s courageous act in the civil right movement proved that
one individual can influence community by fulfilling her own
responsibility. Racial discrimination has been a
social problem, long existing in American society. During the
1950s, this problem became serious, when the Blacks were
deliberately separated from the Whites according to laws. For
example, the Blacks could not go to the Whites’ restaurants, go to
the Whites’ schools nor take the Whites’ buses. On December 1,
1955, Rosa Park refused to give her seat on a bus to a white
passenger just disobeying the civil laws at that time. She later on
was arrested but her arrest soon triggered a famous and
large-scaled bus boycott in American history. Rosa Park is

Challenging dreams can stimulate people to strive for higher goals.
Challenging dreams are set on high standards and tough
requirements, which are usually beyond people’s reach. However, it
does not mean that those dreams are not approachable. Rather, those
dreams always lure people to keep moving on by encouraging people
to fight off potential difficulties. Further, people are quite
accustomed to comfortable and easy environment, where they very
much enjoy the care-free way of life. The stagnant time can easily
wear off people’s spirit and deprive people of the meaning of their
life. So, challenging dreams in this sense can work well as
incentives to drive people out of the old way of life.

Success means
achievement, which has been constantly pursued by people, no matter
what kind of work they undertake. Besides, success can by no means
be obtained easily. Instead, success requires one’s perseverance,
dedication and more importantly, skills. In this sense, some
people, who specialize in one area or one aspect of knowledge, in
my opinion, are more likely to succeed.
Specialists are
exposed to the knowledge of one certain field, which enables them
to enjoy more opportunities to probe into rather than to
comprehensively view knowledge. So, the depth of knowledge can very
much provide those specialists with an upper hand in tough
competition. Specialists suffer much in the proc
