The enemy of unstoppability is distraction. If we could focus our mind on a single goal for a long period of time, the results would be staggering. Unfortunately, our brain is not naturally wired to shut out distractions and move ahead with a single task: it is estimated that the subsconscious mind creates more than 10 different thoughts every minute. If 25 years of practice to become a serene, single minded and accomplished Zen master sounds too much work to increase your focus, then the good news is that there are other simpler ways to help you and your team to move towards unstoppability.

  • Whenever you feel the urge to do something new, and realize that this activity will not help you to achieve your goals, write it down on a 'not-to-do-list.' The act of writing it down brings your brain into 'executive mode.' This state of mind helps you to let the thought go, so it will no longer distract you in

What do you do when an employee is distracting during the meeting? All too often we see employees peaking at their phones or whispering to the person next to them only to disrupt the meeting and its participants. When does coaching come into play? When do you coach the employee? During the meeting or after? The major premise that we share with clients is that coaching is an art and coaching allows you to really know your people. If you do not coach the person during the meeting you maybe sending a message it's okay to behave that way to the rest of the team as you might be perceived as ignoring it. On the other hand you may coach a person during the meeting when in fact the person is distracted for valid and personal reasons; therefore, running the risk of putting someone on the spot unfairly.

There are two schools of thought. One, ask the person during the meeting if they have a question and / or walk by them and simply place

If you've picked up a paper, turned on the news, or surfed the web over the last week, you are no doubt familiar with Hillary Clinton's email dilemma.

In a nutshell, when she was the United States Secretary of State she used a non-government email account for her work and personal communications. In recent weeks, questions have been raised about her email usage, the process employed to save/delete emails, and what, if any, rules or laws may have been violated.

I have no idea how this will ultimately unfold. This may hinder her future political aspirations or flip 180 degrees and put her in the White House. Frankly, that's not my concern or the takeaway for this post. Whether you are a Hillary Clinton advocate or detractor, my intent is not to feed your respective position. I'm simply looking at the situation through a leadership lens in an attempt to identify lessons we all can learn to avoid or at least mitigate simila

When you’re in high-growth mode it can be easy to put the majority of your energy toward running the day-to-day business and table plans to focus on people and organizational issues until things calm down. But do they ever?

In the always connected world we live in today, clearly the answer is no. That’s why a good portion of my efforts go toward ensuring the organization can scale faster than our business, so we’re well-equipped to handle whatever challenges the next stage may bring.

Job Interview: The 5 Questions YOU Must Ask

2014-11-25 hrbank

“So, what questions do you have for us?”

It’s the inevitable question that comes at the end of nearly every job interview — and yet it’s the one question job seekers rarely have prepared an answer to. And when people do think to prepare for this part of the interview, they often ask bland stock questions that aren’t truly important to their job hunt.

People get so hung up on preparing for the question they might get asked that they often forget to answer important questions they should have and need answers to.

Unfortunately, in a down economy, job hunters tend to adopt a scarcity mindset. If you need work, you may not be able to afford to be picky about which offer you accept, but that doesn’t mean you have to approach the interview from that frame of mind.

Rather, if you ask questions as though you are weighing the offer of this job against other offers (whether you are o
