1. I will keep my bowling shoulder lower than the other one.

In order to let my swing stay under my shoulder, I will lower the bowling shoulder at least 10-20 degrees. This will allow me to keep my swing in a straight line. It will position my head more over the ball, making targeting much more accurate. I will keep this tilt throughout the approach and release.

2. I will have the ball weight mostly in the non-bowling hand, and the ball at the right height every time.

I will find the right height for my ball based on the way I swing and the timing I want for the shot I am playing. If I need faster ball speed, I will raise it; for slower, I will lower it. Supporting most to all of the ball’s weight in my non-bowling hand will free the bowling arm to swing without muscle, making it more repeatable.

3. I will have the ball in front of my bowling shoulder.

1. I will have a practice schedule and a practice plan.

I will schedule practice on a given day, weekly. I will write it down both on a calendar and on a separate, permanent record sheet. I will keep records of how long I practiced, or, if I miss practice, I will record the reason.

I will list the items I intend to practice before I leave for the practice session, even if it is on a cocktail napkin. I will include a goal for each item. Afterward, on my record sheet, I will record whether or not I felt I met my goals, and if I need to repeat that item in the next session.

2. I will know the issues I need to improve, and will work on no more than three of them at each session.

As I start to plan the month’s schedule, I will keep in mind the 8 resolutions I made in January (go to BowlSpot.com to see last month’s tip). I will jot down any issues I had in previous league or practice sessions, and prioritiz

Last month we discussed the importance of entry angle for pin carry. This month, we'll look at where the ball needs to be to create that entry angle.

We have long believed, and USBC has confirmed, that an entry angle of about 6 degrees improved strike percentage. USBC studies also showed that the best strike percentage occurred when the ball enters the pins at the 17.5 board.

At left you see the trigonometric formula for determining what the entry angles really mean in terms we actually can use on the lanes. The formulas assume that each board is 1' wide (although actually each is about 1.05' wide, so that 39 of them equal the 41' wide lane surface). At the edge of the lane, the ball is 17.5 boards from the entry board. If we know how far the ball

2)back swing

When you've rolled a bad shot, you may have occasionally heard your bowling buddies say, 'You dropped your shoulder', right? Well, if didn't drop your shoulder, you probably didn't roll a good shot. Consider this, from Bowling This Month's writer, USBC Gold Coach, Joe Slowinski:

'Many amateurs manipulate the ball around the waist, often leading to a swing that is too far behind the back. As a right handed bowler, their push direction moves to the right, loops around the back to the left, and must be moved back to the right to clear the hip again. This often leads to the swing being to far outside of a solid position at the release. With a focus on the most efficient biomechanical movements, these players can obtain a smaller and improved swing slot.

We still have bowlers who think that dropping the shoulder is a physical game flaw. Yet, this dropped shoulder is present in every top player around the world. If you review the stanc

When deciding how to play an oil pattern, two things must be considered: the breakpoint and the entry angle. They are not the same thing. We need to fine-tune our understanding of the two. A few months ago we discussed looking for the best breakpoint based on the length of the oil pattern (a 35 foot pattern will play much differently than a 45 foot pattern). To determine where to play, subtract 31 from the pattern length, and use the result as the exit point from the oil pattern. A 40 foot pattern (40-31=9) would suggest exiting the oil pattern at the 9 board. But that's not to say that the 9 board is your break point.

We know that balls 'push' past the end of the oil pattern as they transition into a roll. USBC studies of high average bowlers show anywhere from 2' to 8', depending on the bowler's ball speed and rev rate (surprisingly, changes in rev rate had a greater effect on the amount of push than ball speed changes, maybe because there is a gr

Changing your line of play to stay in the pocket sounds like a good plan when the lanes change, but it may not be as simple as it sounds.

What's the problem?
As balls roll through the oil, it moves. Some of the balls absorb it, some drag it down toward the pins, and some do a little of both. In any case, pretty soon there's a track of dry through the lane heads where there was oil when you started. And there's a track of oil on the back ends where there was none earlier. Depending on who's bowling with you, the tracks are small and all in one place, or wide and scattered all over. What to do depends on how you bowl and how the lanes break down.

What kind of bowler are you?
If you're a true stroker, you're probably comfortable pretty far outside on the lanes, even out toward the first arrow. If a true cranker, you probably start near or inside of the third arrow. The part in between these two areas is for the (m

push-swing-back swing -release。
