Norwegian snow

By Wang Yuan

Translated by Song Deli

What I deeply remembered, in the winters of these two years, was snow.

I was born in Chongqing. The time I saw a heavy snow for the first time in my life was the end of last January. The coordinate was New York. The reason was that I was honored to participate in the UN youth forum.

In the plane, I saw the alternation of day and night. Looking down, I could see vast ice floating on the sea. In cities, I walked through modern high streets and back lanes and visited the breathtaking Metropolitan Museum; in UN building, I saw large snowflakes madly dancing in the sky in a marvelous abundance. Being too excited, I feverishly burst out a cry immediately after going out of the door, for which others should get startled.

This winter, the memory about snow was in Norway. That was an extremely pure place. Snow-lands, lakes, forests and the sky were spotless. I still remembered that, one evening, the sky was filled with stars that emitted dim light to wrap us tenderly. We were so little that we should seem to have been melted in this place far from the madding crowd.

The mountains and water in the snow were very beautiful. The rolling snowy mountains and the limpid lake water had turned into an impressionistic painting in a pea soup fog. A brisk wind blew over from the forde and microwaves were lightly rolling on and on. The little boats were rocking and rocking. Snowflakes gently fell onto the water surface and stirred up ripples like they were telling stories. But what were the stories about? No one would know. These stories would only be clotted and melted.

In a certain place, the water surface had frozen. It seemed very beautiful but if you stepped onto it, you would be excited but anxious for fear you destroy the thin film that was seemingly hard but in fact fragile. Wouldn't life be like this? It was always like walking on thin ice in beautiful scenery. Going up hills, you would find all was quiet. The towering snow-capped mountains were overgrown with needle-bush. Pressed by thick and heavy snow, yet the trees neither gave out a single croon nor had a single twig broken. Going up onto the summit, you could only find a vast piece of white without being able to tell you were in heaven or in man’s world: cloud, mist, wind, snow, all were mixed together …

Time on the snowy mountains is unusually peaceful, so peaceful that you seem to be able to take this opportunity to hear your inner voice. No one knew what sort of an environment we had entered. He could not but ponder over or go ahead with no purpose. At nightfall, the twinkling lights at mountain feet and the raging bonfire at the lake shore seemed so full of vitality. They were doggedly declaring to the ruthless nature – proving my existence!

This sort of vitality was that even much dimmer, the light would still not abandon the hope to illuminate the way ahead. Even in the chill wind, I would still persist in my strongest and the most independent existence. The wind could not beat me down but instead it could only enable me to become more and more powerful. The snow could not beat me down. It was only a little bit of mild and icy adjustment! It adjusted my life that was passionate as fire.

The existence of a snowflake was brief but gorgeous. The life in snow was weak but stanch. Both the beauty and the cruelty of snow looked like the road we had traveled. It could realize the furthest dream in the weather which was so cold that the ground was frozen.

This prose was published in the 376th issue of World's People of People’s Daily.

I saw large snowflakes madly dancing in the sky in a marvelous abundance.

用姿势优美的dance(舞蹈) 替代简单 fall(降落),要更形象一些。 The snow was falling in a discouraged abundance.
