1. Introduction

Desert <wbr>Strike <wbr>Angel <wbr>6.99t

As you think, the initials DSA stands for a map called Desert Strike Angel in StarCraft. It doesn't matter if you aren't good at it and my this post's aim is certainly helping you understand how to play and enjoy it.

You may be familiar to other DS, and in a sense, this version is mostly the same in playing, you also need resources to create various buildings which will spawn different and corresponding units and the computer will command them to battle, the mission objective is also kill your enemy Protoss Temple. So it is easy to play.

But if they are just these, I don't need to write this introduction. Because the DSA has own distinguishing features such as many interesting and surprising modes, new multifariou Systems, upgrading in default and so on. Maybe it is too complicated that you have some troubles in mastering it. You can save replays to watch in multiplayer as same as hosting a map at a high rate of speed.

I hope you can understand after reading this expository writing and then feel good about it. And now, it's time to explain it in detail in some sections below.


2. Mode System

DSA has many modes to choose. It can satisfy the various needs of players. Only the master can has the accessibility to select modes. Under normal conditions, the master is P1 (Player 1) if it exists or P2 without P1 or P3 without P1 and P2. And in fact, you can enter DSA alone without any other player.

As you see in the screenshot (from DSA 7.0beta) above, there are some pylons and display texts as note.

1) If you kill/attack the pylon of “Start” by the tank, the game will start.   

2) If you want to chat with other players in words, you should kill the pylon of “Chatting”, because the display texts will always exist until the game starts.

3) Killing the pylon of “Other Modes” will enter the next mode’s menu and the mode’s quantity reaches 21, you can read and understand them below.

4) Killing the pylon of “Random Mode” will select a random mode.

5) Killing the pylon of “Mode Preview” will enter mode’s list as nether Screenshot, the master can enter each mode-menu’s tier in shortcut respectively.

Of course, you can start the game without any other mode, and it will be played in default mode. If you select the mode improperly, it doesn't matter, you can kill the pylon of “Reselect Mode” in the last menu’s tier to cancel any mode you chose.

2.1 Other Modes

The explanation of the Other Modes in the screenshot above are as follow:

1. No Fog

There is no fog in game, so all players can see each other.

2. No Market

Market means shop. It's above the base of Player 2 or below Player 6's. Choosing it means can't use the market.

3. No wall

And at the beginning, the wall Psi Disrupter in everyone’s base will disappear, all players have 6 workers (and 4 workers in default). It means the game will start from Lock 2.

4. Single Race

It means everyone can’t buy any other race in the market.

5. Two Races 

Every player must select the second race in market at the beginning and then the view of game will come back own base.

6. Three Races

Everyone will have three races at the beginning.

7. 6000 ore/gas

Everyone’s resource will add 6000 ore and 3000 gas at the beginning.

8. 12000 ore/gas

Everyone’s resource will add 12000 ore and 6000 gas at the beginning.

9. Fast Income

Everyone’s income of additive resources will be faster and that is two times of the default one.

10. Player Control

The units spawned will be controlled by player but not computer.

11. Observer Control

The units spawned will be controlled by Observer but not computer which is not build-in observer in SC but that one killing the building Zerg Cerebrate whose name is Become an Observer (Kill) in front the of everyone’s base in DSA.

12. Crazy Magic

The Magic units will be stronger because of being full of energy.

13. 40s Spawning

The countdown timer will set to 40 Seconds all the time (In default, the timer will set to 30s at the beginning and be added 10s per 10m).

14. 60s Spawning

The countdown timer will set to 60s all the time.

15. No Resources Board

The resource board will be closed at the top-left corner of your screen.

16. Combined Spawning

All the players but observers will spawn together when the countdown timer reaches 0s.

When the game starts in combined spawning, the two forces will spawn the same total number of time. For example, when the game is in 2:3, the team/force of having 2 players will also spawn 3 times in all at 0s because one of them will spawn 2 times. In addition, when the game starts or becomes in 1:1 later on, both of the two players will 2 times every time (Double Spawning).

17. Two Silos

At the beginning, there are just two silos in the outside battlefield and other rules will be displayed by texts. The Silo 1 will disappear.

18. No Evolution

In default, several most units can evolve into a hero prevent from Max. And this mode will can't make the units evolve.

19. Has Upgraded

In default, the DSA need you upgrade units, but in this mode, you won't need to upgrade any unit.

It is just used in SC 1.08b.

2.2 Special Modes

2.2.1 The Observer Mode

The player Killing the building Zerg Cerebrate whose name is “Become an Observer (Kill)” in front of everyone’s base in game will become an observer and it just can watch the game in god's vision without any spawning and any unit except the tagged building. This observer mode in game is different from the build-in observer of SC and it can be chose all the time in game.

2.2.2 Separate Mode

You can enter game alone to have an experience and research about this map without any other player (human).

 

3. Interfacial System

The interface of DSA pays attention to details in order to keep clean and tidy and make you comfort and easy to play, in addition, it also has many useful functions of game such as timer and the amount of  bombs in the display board. You can look at the screenshot as follow.

3.1 Resource Table

Part 1 (Resource of human player P1/2/3/5/6/7) displays everyone’s resource situation, and who becomes an observer will display 0 ore and 0 gas all the time.

3.2 Game Clock

Part 2 (Resource of computer player P8) displays elapsed time from the start of menu on. And the DSA has only one same time scale which is real time including countdown time and any other time's mark.

3.3 Bomb Number

Part 3 (Resource of computer player P4) displays the bomb's quantity of the two forces. The left/ore of table means the bomb amount of Angel and the right/gas means Demon’s one. And in the game start, every force will be provided 3 bombs in all.

 

4. Market System

The DSA attaches great importance to strategic planning, and the market system which you should value is one of the important playing method.

There are two markets each other. We can call the big one Market 1 and the small one Market 2 as the picture below.

At first, you should move a worker to Market 1 to choose services unless that you have a market Bargainer (Sarah Kerrigan) when you reach L.2 (Lock 2).

Of course, there is a Devouring One (Zergling) underground in the Market 2 at the beginning unless in No Market’s mode. For example, you can move the Devouring One to place 1 with 400 gas and then the countdown time will be added 10s each time.

To explain the market’s function in the screenshot above:

1. Add countdown time

You can add the countdown time 10s with 400 gas and jsut use it three times at most every spawning cycle.

2. Queue Control

The big one calls Reset Default Queue, and the small ones calls Queue Control which make the units spawn in three different directions corresponding on the outside battlefield. It will spend you 200 gas every time. But resetting the queue to default setting (four directions) is free.

3. Subtract countdown time

You can subtract the countdown time 10s with 400 gas every time and just use it three times at most every spawning cycle.

4. Buy Race

As the worker’s name, the primary race costs 500 ore and this will give you a worker and add you the maximum quantity of workers (but at the same time it will reduce the maximum quantity  of Devouring One in the ore bank). The second race costs 7000 ore and the third race costs 9000 ore, the maximum quantity of them is always four, they will given four workers in your base.

5. Add enemy the P.T. (Pausal-time of income)

When the P.T. is 0s, you can catch some incomes from the vespene geyser, three bombs of your force, three buildings/silos outside of your computer-ally and the Devouring Ones in Ore Bank as bankbooks. And now, you can add your enemy the P.T. 30s with 500 gas to make them have no income in 30s each time.

6. Loan Bank

You can borrow 1000 ore from the loan bank each time, then you will have a Devouring One in place 6.5 as a debt, and you must pay interest until giving back to loan bank. The interest is -2.25 ore/s when you are in Lock 0 and -2 ore/s from Lock 1.

And then your resource reaches more than 1000 ore and move the Devouring One in place 6.5, your Devouring One will die and the Loan Bank will reduce you 1000 ore. You can just borrow one debt in Lock 0, two debts in Lock 1, three debts in Lock 2 and four debts in Lock 3.

There is a balanced rule: if you lift off building to make it's addon canceled, you can't use the Bank in that spawning cycle.

7. Cut own the P.T. (Pausal-time of income)

After you build vespene geyser, your P.T. will be added. The numerical value of them are wrote in the vespene geyser as name. For example, the first vespene geyser will add you P.T. 30s and the Second one add 60s and so on. Now, you can use this function with 300 gas to cut the P.T. 30s. You don’t need wait for the decrease of the P.T. spontaneously.

8. Ore bank

It’s function is contrary to the Loan Bank’s. When you have more than 1000 ore and move a unit to Ore Bank, you will reduce 1000 ore and have a a Devouring One in place 8.5 as a bankbook, and then you will gain interest from the bankbooks. The interest is +1.75 ore/s at basics, when your computer-ally has one more silo than enemy, the interest is +2 ore/s, two more one means +2.25 ore/s, three more one means +2.5 ore/s.

But if you have one less, for example, enemy kills your silo so that its number is reduced and the interest will be reduced accordingly at the same time but it is +1.75 ore/s at least. From above the part 4 (Loan Bank), we know the maximal quantity of primary race’s workers and bankbook is restrained, it’s 4 in lock 0, 5 in lock 1, 6 in lock 2, 7 in lock 3.

There is a balanced rule: if you lift off building to make it's addon canceled, you can't use the Bank in that spawning cycle.

9. Buy Ore

You can buy 300 ore with 400 gas before lock 2 (500 gas in and after lock 2).

10. To base

The beacons in DSA are doors to other place. And this can move the unit on it to your base.

11. Buy Gas

You can buy 300 gas with 400 ore before lock 2 (500 ore in and after lock 2).

12. Economic Assistance

If you have ally and your ally reach lock 1 (the Zerg Lurker Egg there will disappear), you can move a Devouring One in place 8.5 to the place 12 with 100 gas as commission charge and then it will die, at the same time, your ally will add 1000 ore.

And There is a balanced rule: if you leave or become observer, the receiver will return all received resources. If the receiver leave or become observer, you will return all provided resources.


5. Lock System

The DSA has four locks. At start, all players are in lock 0 (Unless in the mode of No Wall and it starts in lock 2), we just only unlock from building vespene geyser or killing enemy silo (Computer’s building outside, there are 3 each force).

They control the maximum number of workers, bankbook /loan (Devouring One in Ore Bank/Loan Bank) and the switch of Economic Assistance of market.

5.1 Lock 0

5.1.1 The default maximum number of primary race’s workers is 4.

5.1.2 The default maximum number of the bankbook in the Ore Bank is 4.

5.1.3 The maximum number of the loan is 1 and it's interest is -2.25 ore/s.

5.1.4 The interest of the bankbook is +1.75 ore/s.

5.2. Lock 1

5.2.1 Build 3 Vespene Geysers

When the P.T. (Pausal-time of income) and the W.T. (Wall-time to Kill/Unlock) is 0s, It's new function as follow:

5.2.1.1 The point is that it means you unlock lock 1. And then, you reach lock 1 if you was in lock 0 at that time.

5.2.1.2 The default maximum number of primary race’s workers and the bankbook are 5;

5.2.1.3 The maximum number of the loan is 1 and it's interest is -2 ore/s from -2.25 ore/s.

5.2.1.4 Your Zerg Lurker Egg in market will disappear, it means your ally can give you resources from Economic Assistance.

5.2.1.5 The Mineral Field 2 will be open (It means the building Zerg Cerebrate Daggoth will disappear and the workers can gather ore there).

5.2.2 kill the enemy Silo 1

New function as follow:

5.2.2.1 The point is that it means you unlock lock 1. And then, you reach lock 1 if you was in lock 0 at that time.

5.2.2.2 The default maximum number of primary race’s workers and the bankbook are 5;

5.2.2.3 The maximum number of the loan is 1 and it's interest is -2 ore/s from -2.25 ore/s.

5.2.2.4 Your Zerg Lurker Egg in market will disappear, it means your ally can give you resources from Economic Assistance.

5.2.2.5 And add you 1 grade in rate of interest from Bankbook in Ore Bank (+R.1). It means that one bankbook will add +0.25 ore/s as additional interest. At the same time, it will subtract enemy 1 grade in rate (-R.1) and the enemy bankbook’s interest will reduce -0.25 ore/s until reaching +1.75 ore/s at least, and add enemy P.T. 30s.

5.3 Lock 2

5.3.1 Build 5 Vespene Geysers

When the P.T. and the W.T. is 0s, it's new function as follow:

5.3.1.1 The point is that it means you unlock lock 2. And then, you reach lock 2 if you was in lock 1 at that time.

5.3.1.2 The default maximum number of primary race’s workers and the bankbook are 6;

5.3.1.3 The Mineral Field 3 will be open (It means the wall Psi Disrupter in the base will disappear and the workers can gather ore there).

5.3.1.4 Can use new area in the base.

5.3.2 kill the enemy Silo 2

New function as follow:

5.3.2.1 The point is that it means you unlock lock 2. And then, you reach lock 2 if you was in lock 1 at that time.

5.3.2.2 The default maximum number of primary race’s workers and the bankbook are 6;

5.3.2.3 And add you 1 grade in rate of interest from Bankbook in Ore Bank (+R.1). It means that one bankbook will add +0.25 ore/s as additional interest again. At the same time, it will subtract enemy 1 grade in rate (-R.1) and the enemy bankbook’s interest will reduce -0.25 ore/s until reaching +1.75 ore/s at least, and add enemy P.T. 60s.

5.4 Lock 3

5.4.1 Build 7 Vespene Geysers

When the P.T. and the W.T. is 0s, it's new function as follow:

5.4.1.1 The point is that it means you unlock lock 3. And then, you reach lock 3 if you was in lock 2 at that time.

5.4.1.2 The default maximum primary race’s number of workers and the bankbook are 7;

5.4.1.4 Clear the 5 vespene geysers on the left side but their incomes will exist all the time.

5.4.1.5 The building Norad II near the Mineral Field 3 will disappear so that the worker gather resources in shortcut.

5.4.1.6 Can fly to area of your ally to develop or give building to your ally there.

5.4.2 kill the enemy Silo 3

New function as follow:

5.4.2.1 The point is that it means you unlock lock 3. And then, you reach lock 3 if you was in lock 2 at that time.

5.4.2.2 The default maximum number of primary race’s workers and the bankbook are 7;

5.4.2.3 And add you 1 grade in rate of interest from Bankbook in Ore Bank (+R.1). It means that one bankbook will add +0.25 ore/s as additional interest again.At the same time, it will subtract enemy 1 grade in rate (-R.1) and the enemy bankbook’s interest will reduce -0.25 ore/s until reaching +1.75 ore/s at least, and add enemy P.T. 90s.

5.4.2.4 The enemy can’t use Loan Bank, and the unit Uraj Crystal as mark of Loan Bank will disappear.


6. Resource System

The DSA needs two kind resources in default unless in the mode of No Gas (But the v6.98s has no this mode). Except the workers (SCV/Probe/Drone) gathering, the resources are from several incomes as follow:

6.1 The Vespene Geyser

Each Vespene Geyser (GAS) will offer +1.75 ore/s and +1 gas/s in default (but it will add +3.5 ore/s and +2 gas/s in the mode of Fast Income); 

6.2 The Silo 1

The Silo 1 is the building Stasis Cell/Prison. It will offer +1 ore/s.

6.3 The Silo 2

The Silo 2 is the building Xel'Naga Temple. It will offer +1 ore/s. and +1 gas/s.

6.4 The Silo 3

The Silo 3 is the building Warp Gate. It will offer +1 ore/s. and +1 gas/s.

6.5 The Bomb

Each bomb from own force will offer +1 ore/s. It means your ally bomb can also offer this income. The bomb doesn't refers to you but your whole force.

6.6 The Bankbook

Each bankbook (Devouring One) in the Ore Bank will offer +1.75 ore/s in default. But it’s interest is floating, you can understand it well after read the content about Ore Bank below.

6.7 The Loan

Each loan will charge you as interest of debt. It will make your income reduce -2.25/-2.0 ore/s. You can understand it well after read the content about Loan Bank below.

6.8 In Specific Mode

In some specific modes, the income may be different. For example, in the mode of Two Silo, the Fortress (Protoss Temple) will offer +6 ore/s, but the Silos and the bombs won't, and there is a display text to you.

6.9 Difference between Vespene Geyser and Bankbook

As two main ways of gaining incomes, the vespene geyser and the bankbook are different as follow:

1) Every new vespene geyser will take you some P.T. (Pausal-time of income) and then your all income will be paused until the P.T reach 0s, but the bankbook won't take any P.T. and even it can be took out as principal which costs 1000 ore every bankbook liking current deposit in the realistic bank.

2) The kinds of their incomes are different. The vespene geyser takes incomes of ore and gas at the same time, but the bankbook only takes incomes of ore.

3) The vespene geyser's income is settled but the bankbook's is floating.

 

7. Evolutionary System

The Evolutionary System is mainly used to prevent the Map-max. So if the number of certain unit reaches about 70 all over the map, several ones will evolve into a corresponding hero. For example, the number of Protoss Zealot reaches 69, and nine of them will evolve into a Fenix (Zealot).

There is an especial evolution about the building "5 Marines" (Terran Barracks). When them reach more than 17 ones, 16 ones of them will be killed and become a man "80 Marines" (Matriarch).

 

8. Building System

As any other versions of DS , the DSA just need you build units and the computer will spawn the units in the battlefield automatically when the countdown time is 0s unless in the mode of Player Control and Observer Control. But the DSA has own feature, and some building spawn different units from other DS. For example, the building Terran Armory doesn't spawn Terran Valkyrie what we often see in the other DS the but Terran Goliath.

The DSA renames most of buildings and some units. That is to say, what the buildings or units do are wrote into their names. For example, the Zerg Spawning Pool in SC is renamed 6 Zerglings in DSA, it means that it will spawn 6 zerglings when the countdown time is 0s. Of course, the buildings in DSA are free from local restrictions, for example the Barracks can lift off to fly to save the place and will spawn the same 5 Marines.

10. Version Updating

Sometimes, we go to Battle.net to play StarCraft: Remastered and find that it’s funny to play DSA in double speed (Add the character strings after the game name: #x2).

The DSA which continually strives after perfection has a history for several years and is well received by many players, even though we know it's impossible to reach.    

You can trust it. As time goes on, this map has almost 500 test versions and 70 official versions. Many persons make great efforts as a result that it belongs to it’s all the players. It’s full of wisdom of crowd, and we hope everyone can offer helps.

The version updating will go on in future. We will deal with any bug immediately and try any new and good idea. We hope more and more players join and enjoy it.

The new version will be more perfect. And now, we are testing the version 7.0beta, and it will be more balanced, wonderful, and easilier to play. It can also support to search the host of DSA through using the abbreviations “dsa”.
