(英文版)崂山道士的故事

(2012-12-22 23:37:53)

A Lao Shan Taoist

Lao Shan Mountain is a famous place of Taoism in China. The reason for its fame is that all Taoists from Lao Shan are very skillful at a particular type of martial arts.

One day, a persistent man came to Lao Shan and begged an old Taoism master to teach him defense skills. The master accepted the man’s plea and challenged the man to try to kill flies using his hands.

"What? Master, you want me to kill flies with my bear hands?" the man answered in disbelief. He felt that the master was testing his loyalty to Taoism. Thus, he began to practice smashing flies with his hands in the temple day-by-day. After a year, the man was able to kill any fly that landed on the wall within his reach. He then asked the master to teach him real skills of defense instead of killing flies. The master ignored the man’s request and tested him by asking the man to catch a fly in air with his hands. The man struggled without success as he watched the master effortlessly catch the fly by clasping his hands together.

"What? Master, you want me to catch a flying bug with two hands?" The man assumed that the master was testing his abilities. He practiced catching flying bugs with his hands month-by-month. After three years, the man could catch any bug that dared to fly near him. He again asked the master to teach him real skills of defense, instead of simply catching flying bugs. The master challenged him with many flying bugs, but the man could not handle them with ease by clasping his hands together. Then, the master demonstrated killing flys using only two fingers.

"What? Master, you want me to kill flying bugs with two fingers?" The man convinced himself that the master gave him such difficulties to prepare him to learn real skills. He practiced devotedly year-by-year. After five years, the man became so skillful that he could take down anything that flew within his reach as easy as 1-2-3. One day, he performed his skills in the front of the master and earnestly asked to learn real skills of defense. The master smiled and answered: "You have already learnt it."

"What? Master, I want to learn defense skills, but all you have asked me to do is to kill flies for so many years." Frustrated and angry, the man turned to leave because he felt that he had been cheated. He rushed down along a trail of Lao Shan. Suddenly, he heard the master calling him from the top of the mountain. As he turned around, three arrows were flying right at his head. He instinctively reached out his hands and grabbed those arrows in mid-flight. Astonished, the man stared at arrows clamped firmly in his fingers. At that moment, he suddenly realized that he had learned from his master the defense skills that he so desperately sought.
