I’m really getting tired of walking to school every day, so this morning I asked Mom if she would drive me and Rowley. The reason I didn’t ask her sooner is because Mom’s car is covered in all these embarrassing bumper stickers, and kids at my school are brutal when it comes to that sort of thing.

每天步行上学让我烦得不行，所以这天早晨我问老妈她能不能开车送我和劳里。之所以原先没问她，是因为老妈的车上到处都贴满了这些令人难堪的车贴；要知道我们学校的那些孩子只要碰上了这种事，那可是丝毫不留情面的。

I’m tired of scraping the bumper stickers off, but whatever kind of glue they put on those things is meant to last until the end of time.

刮掉这些车贴让我觉得累得很。不管他们用的是什么胶水，他们就是想让这些车贴永远都刮不掉。

Today me and Rowley got a ride from Mom, but I told her to let us out BEHIND the school.

这天我和劳里搭了老妈的车，但我告诉老妈车开到学校后面的时候就让我们下来。

Well, I made the dumb mistake of leaving my backpack in the car, so Mom brought it to me in fourth period. And of course she picked TODAY to finally start going to the gym.

咳，我犯了一个很愚蠢的错误，就是把背包忘在车上了，后来老妈在第四堂课的时候把包交给我。老妈之所以选了今天这个日子，是因为她终于要去上健身课了。

It was just my luck, too. Fourth period is the only time I have a class with Holly Hills, and I’ve been trying to make a good impression on her this year. I figure this incident probably set me back about three weeks.

也算我倒霉，第四堂课正好是我能和荷丽希一起上的课，本来今年我一直想给荷丽希留下个好印象的，出了这么个事，我想她对我的好感指数可能会直降三个星期了。

I’m not the only one who’s trying to impress Holly Hills, either. I think just about every boy in my class has crush on her.

我也不是唯一想讨好荷丽希的人，我觉得大概班上的每个男生都想得到她的青睐。

Holly is the fourth-prettiest girl in the class, but the top three all have boyfriends. So a lot of guys like me are doing everything they can to get in good with her.

其实荷丽希在班上的美女中只排行老四，不过前三个都有男朋友了。顺理成章地，很多像我一样的家伙只能竭力去讨好她了。

I’ve been trying to come up with an angle to separate myself from the rest of the goobers who like Holly. And I think I finally figured it out: humor.

我一直琢磨着找一个好的角度，想让自己和那些喜欢荷丽希的小屁孩显得与众不同。最后，我觉得终于琢磨出来一个道道，那就是“幽默”。

See, the kids in my class are like Neanderthals when it comes to jokes. To give you an idea of what I’m talking about, here’s the kind of thing that passes for comedy at my school —

I’ve been using Rowley as my comedy partner, and I’ve actually trained him on a couple of pretty decent jokes.

我一直利用劳里当喜剧搭档，也确实在很多相当高档次的“喜剧”中让他经受了考验。

呵呵呵...

The only problem is, Rowley is starting to get a little greedy about who gets to say what, so I don’t know if this partnership is gonna work out long-term.

不过有个问题。在关于“谁该说哪句话”的问题上，劳里开始表现得有点得寸进尺了，所以我也不知道这种搭档关系到底还能管多久。

CAN I DO THE ‘DOGGIE DROPPED IT’ PART?

UM…I DON’T THINK SO.

能不能让我说“狗狗扔的呗”那部分啊？

嗯...我觉得不行吧。
