RENOVATION plans for Blacktown Aquatic Centre are set to go ahead with Blacktown Council voting in favour of the improvement works.

A $1.8 million upgrade of the Boyd St centre will be discussed at tonight’s council meeting and the revitalisation project will focus on the repair of existing pools.

The renovation will include much-needed improvements to outdated equipment such as switchboards and sand filters as well as the urgently required maintenance to the boilers and plant room roof.

An overhaul of the foyer, change rooms and club house with creche will also be considered.

Council reports say the sand filter system at the pool no longer complies with health and safety standards.

Blacktown mayor Stephen Bali said the repairs were a high priority.

“Blacktown Aquatic Centre is 53 years old and requires urgent upgrades to modernise the facility and get it up to standard,” he said.

“Council looked at the plan to build a new 25m pool and decided it would be better to reallocate the money to modernising the existing facilities.

“It is more important the emergency works are completed so the Blacktown Aquatic Centre is up to standard for residents.”

Installation of extra emergency exits and emergency duress alarms, improvements to supervision control, a new gas barbecue and increased ventilation in the pool hall will also be done as part of the renovations.

About $50,000 has already been spent on repairs to the grandstand.

Cr Bali said the renovation works would extend beyond the pool deck.

“A half-pipe skate ramp with a shade cover has been added to the upgrade proposal following public consultation,’’ he said.

“We want to make the aquatic centre an attractive facility for residents.”
