1. wave [weiv] v. 招手

1vt. 招手、挥手

eg. She waved at me.

   她向我挥手

eg. I waved a good bye.

   我挥手道别

eg. We waved a greeting to the teacher.

   我们挥手向老师问好。

eg. He waved me across the street.

   他挥手示意我穿过街道。

eg. I waved him out.

   我挥手叫他出去。

2) n. 挥动,挥手示意

eg. She gave me a wave.

   她对我挥手。

5. speed limit  限速

speed

eg. I didn’t dream last night.

   我昨晚没有做梦。

eg. He sometimes dreams of hometown.

dream of doing sth.

eg. I often dreamed of becoming a pilot.

   我时常梦想成为一名飞行员。

dream a dreadful dream 做一个恶梦

dream away  虚度(时间),梦一样地过日子

7. sign [sain]   n. 标记,牌子

1n. 招牌,告示,标志,标记

eg. the sign of a barber’s shop

   理发店的标志

a traffic sign 交通标志

eg. Can’t you read that “No Smoking” sign?

   你看不懂那“禁止吸烟”的标志吗?

2 n. 姿态,手势,信号

talk by signs 用手势交谈

eg. The teacher made a sign to us to be quiet.

   老师做了个手势叫我们安静。

sign language (尤其指聋哑人的)手势语

=driver’s licence

9. charge [tʃɑ:dʒ]   v. 罚款

1v. 罚款

charge sb + money(钱数)  罚某人……钱

2v. 要价

eg. How much do you charge for a room with a bath?

   带浴室的房间要价多少钱?

eg. They’ll charge at least $600 for moving the piano.

   搬运这驾钢琴,他们要价600美元。

charge sb + money(钱数) for sth.

向……索取……费用

eg. They charged me five dollars for a cup of coffee.

   这杯咖啡他们收我五美元。

eg. Do you charge for delivery?

   你们送货要收费吗?

eg. There is 10 percent service charge.

   需要另收10%的服务费

eg. There is no charge for admission.

   入场不收费。

free of charge 免费地

eg. You get service free of charge.

10. darling ['dɑ:liŋ] n. 亲爱的(用作表示称呼)

1n. 用作表示称呼

my darling 亲爱的(夫妇,情人,父母,子女之间所用的称呼)

eg. Mary is her father’s darling

   玛丽是他爸爸的心肝宝贝。

2) adj. 心爱的,喜爱的

one’s darling daughter 心爱的女儿

 

【课文讲解】

1. ANN: Look, Gary! That policeman's waving to you.

look! 瞧!(用来引起别人的注意)

eg. Look, you are crying again.

   瞧,你又哭了。

eg. Look, I was only trying to help

   瞧,我只不过想尽量帮忙。

wave to you 向你招手(可与to 搭配使用的动词:)

shout to sb. 向着某人的方向大声呼叫

point to sb. 指向某人

speak to sb. 与某人说话

talk to sb与某人谈话

say hello/good-bye to sb. 向某人打招呼/告别

 

2. He wants you to stop.

want sb. to do sth. (想)要某人做某事

eg. He wants me to help him.

   他想让我帮助他。

eg. They want me to stay away.

   他们叫我躲开/别靠近。

eg. Don’t you want me to go on

   你不想让我继续下去吗?

可用于vt + sb. + to do sth. (及物动词+某人+动词不定式)结构的动词有:

(部分列举)

tell sb. to do sth. 叫某人做某事

ask sb. to do sth. 请求某人做某事

order sb. to do sth. 命令某人做某事

wish sb. to do sth. 希望某人做某事

allow sb. to do sth. 允许某人做某事

teach sb. to do sth. 教某人做某事

 

3. POLICEMAN: Where do you think you are?

do you think是用在特殊疑问句中的插入语,用来征询见解或表达看法。

入语一般是对句子加一些附加解释,在句子中作独立成分。常用来作插入语的结构有I hopeI thinkIm afraidyou know等。插入语可位于句尾或句中,有时也可出现在疑问句。

where you are的表语,you are 是动词think 的宾语从句。

该句的语序是:从句表语(where+主句谓语(think+从句主语(you+从句谓语(系动词are

主从句成份互相交织,因此被称为“连锁式疑问句”。

eg. What do you think you can do now?

   你认为你现在应该做什么?

eg. Who do you think he is?

   你认为他是谁?

eg. How much do you guess I spent today?

   你猜我今天花了多少钱?

 

4. On a race track?

=Do you think you are on a race track?

 

5. You must have been driving at seventy miles an hour.

must 表示较有把握的主观猜测,意思是“一定是……”其基本句型如下:

1)  must + 动词原形(一般情况推测)

eg. You must be sick.

   你一定是病了。

2) must + be + v-ing (正在发生情况推测)

eg. They must be drinking now.

   他们一定在喝酒。

3) must + have + v-ed (过去分词)(对过去情况的推测)

eg. You must have drunk last night.

   昨晚你一定喝酒了。

4) must + have been + v-ing (现在分词)

    表示对过去某一时刻,某一时间动作的猜测,或过去一直到现在的

eg. You must have been drinking when I called you last night.

    昨晚我打电话的时候你一定正在喝酒。(过去的某一时刻:即打电话的时候正在发生的动作的猜测)

eg. You must have been watching TV yesterday afternoon.

你昨天下午一定在看电视。(过去一段时间)

eg. You must have been preparing for the meeting in the last two weeks.

    过去的两周你一定一直在准备这次会议。

at seventy miles an hour 以每小时70英里的速度

表示速度用at

at the speed of seventy miles an hour

at 1000 miles a second 以每秒1000英里的速度

at 100 meters a minute.

a(n)=per 每……

 

6. GARY: I can't have been.

= I can’t have been driving at seventy miles an hour.

= I can’t have been driving so fast.

can’t (must 表猜测时的否定形式,不可能)

eg. he can’t be in London. I saw him here only this morning.

   他不能在伦敦,我今儿早还在这儿见到他。

eg. You can’t be at home. I can hear the noise of the train.

   你不可能在家,我都能听见火车的声音。

eg. They can’t have finished their job yesterday.

   他们不可能昨天把活儿干完。

eg. You can’t have been staying alone.

   你不可能是一直一个人呆着。

 

7. POLICEMAN: I was doing eighty when I overtook you.

=I was driving at eighty miles an hour.

…when I overtook you 时间状语从句

overtake = catch up with 赶上、追上

 

8. Didn't you see the speed limit?

这是一个否定疑问句,表示责问

 

9. GARY: I'm afraid I didn't, officer.

= I am afraid I didn’t see the speed limit.

 

10.GARY: I must have been dreaming.开小车

dream a dream 做一个梦

 

11.ANN: He wasn't dreaming, officer.

 

12.I was telling him to drive slowly.

was telling 用进行时态加强语气证明“我一直都在告诉他”。

tell sb. to do sth.

eg. Tell him to stop.

   叫他停下来。

eg. Tell him to come closer

   叫他走近点。

 

13.GARY: That's why I didn't see the sign.

why 引起名词从句作表语

That’s why … “所以”(用于解释原因)

eg. That’s why I was late.

   这就是我迟到的原因。

eg. That’s why I am angry.

   这就是我生气的原因。

 

14.POLICEMAN: Let me see your driving licence.

let sb do sth. 让某人做某事(接不带to 的动词不定式)

eg. Let me have a look.

   让我看一下。

eg. Let me tell you the reason.

   让我告诉你原因吧!

driving licence= driver’s licence驾照

practice licence 营业执照

 

15.I won't charge you this time.

charge you 罚你的款

this time  这次

that time 那次

every time 每次,每当

next time 下次

 

16.But you'd better not do it again!

you’d better = you had better

had better (not ) do sth.最好(不)做某事

eg. You’d better come back early.

   你最好早点回来。

eg. You’d better not tell him the truth.

   你最好别告诉他实情。

 

17.GARY: Thank you. I'll certainly be more careful.

 

18.ANN:  I told you to drive slowly, Gary.

 

19.GARY: You always tell me to drive slowly, darling.

 

20.ANN: Well, next time you'd better take my advice!

 

take/follow one’s advice 接受某人的意见

 

QWhat does Ann advise her husband to do next time?
