名言是名人的创作、语录或作品中的一部分。有的名言确是无名的作者所作。名言是作者用精炼的语言所表达的宝贵经验、教训,高超的见识,深邃的智慧,独特的看法,客观的规律,普遍的这里,真挚的教诲,热忱的希望。学好名言有助于我们智慧地看待整个世界,就好像聆听大师的教诲,如明灯指引我们前进的方向。

英语翻译之英语谚语

   辞海》说:谚语是“熟语的一种,流传于民间的简练通俗而富有意义的语句,大多反映人民生活和斗争的经验。”《现代汉语词典》说:谚语是“在群众中间流传的固定语句,用简单通俗的话反映出深刻的道理。”泽尔巴赫说:“谚语是凝结的群众智慧。”英国政治家约翰·罗素说:“谚语是一个人的才智,也是许多人的才智。”

       英语的maxim意为:格言、箴言;谚语;原理、主义;行为准则等。proverb意为:谚语、古话;俗语、箴言等。quotation意为语录、名言、谚语。学好谚语,对于英语的提高非常有帮助,一些谚语如果能够做到信手拈来,会让你的文采增色不少。比较谚语的中文和英文,也会让你体会到不同文化之间很多道理都是相同的。有的智慧是如此的相似,简直如出一辙。不得不感慨人类之伟大。希望大家真正学好谚语,并提高自己的英语水平。

有关Live的英语成语

英语翻译之妙语、名言、谚语;有关Live的英语成语       英语成语正如中文当中的成语,多半是有典故的,成语往往是有故事的,抑或是有历史的,所以我们中国人在学习英文当中,一旦碰到英语成语会百思不得其解,而且查阅很多词典会无功而返,很多时候,成语的意思不约定俗成的,通过正常的语法逻辑是难以辨别已死的,需要通过句子的意思,或者是上下文来判断它的意思,以下是有关live的一些英语成语,对于我们了解英语成语可窥一斑。

1.  live and learn=learn by (bitter) experience吃一堑,长一智

E.g.: I bought a second-handed sewing machine and then had to pay out lots of money to replace many worn parts. You live and learn----it would have been cheaper to buy a new one!

我买了台旧缝纫机,但后来花好多钱更换损坏了的部件。吃一堑,长一智----还不如买台新的便宜!

2.  live and let live=be unconcerned what other people do, as long as they tolerate what one does oneself 不关心别人干什么

E.g.: We get on well with our next-door neighbors----it’s a case of live and let live.

我们与隔壁邻居相处的不错----重要的是不要干涉别人干什么。

3.  live by=maintain life by means of, or live near to靠…过生活;住在…附近

E.g.: They live by their hands.他们靠双手劳动生活。

E.G.: We live by our university.我们住在大学附近。

4.  Live by one’s wits=survive using cunning / one’s mental ability (rather than, for example, by hard work)靠自己的智力(而不是经过艰苦劳动)过日子

E.g.: I couldn’t get a permanent job so I had to live by my wits for a couple of years.

我没能找到长久的工作,因此这两年来我只能靠我的门槛吃饭。

5.  live down=live in such a way that (past guilt / scandal / foolishness, etc.) is forgotten or forgiven / manage to forget改正行为而使(以往的过错、丑闻、蠢事等)被人遗忘(原谅);设法忘掉

E.g.: Twenty years later, his family are still trying to live the scandal down.

20年过去了,他的一家仍在努力设法忘记那件丑闻。

6.  live from hand to mouth=to have only sufficient for one’s immediate needs, with nothing for the future仅足糊口

E.g.: After my husband was made redundant, we had to live from hand to mouth until he found another job.

在我丈夫失业后还没有找到另外工作之前,我们的生活很困苦,仅足糊口。

7.  live in sin=live together as man and wife without being married同居

E.g.: Living in sin si no longer the social stigma it once was.

现在同居不再像过去那样被认为是一种社会的耻辱行为。

8.  live it up=enjoy oneself (through excessive spending / indulgence) 纵情欢乐;奢侈浪费(上海广播电台有一档英语口语节目也叫"live it up",曾经晚上经常听该档节目,以提高听力水平。)

E.g.: We always take plenty of money on holiday so that we can live it up for at least two weeks in the year.

我们通常带很多钱去度假,这样在一年里至少有两星期我们能纵情欢乐。

9.  live on=continue to live or exist, or rely on as food继续活着,以…为主食

E.g.: He will die, but his fame will live on after him.

他总是要死的,但是他的声誉将永存下去。

E.g.: We live chiefly on rice.

我们以大米为主食。

10.  live on one’s reputation=succeed because of former achievements (without making new efforts) (没有经过新的努力)而靠过去的成就取得成功

E.g.: Vincent lives on his reputation these days; he doesn’t go out seeking new business, it comes to him.

文森特现在靠过去的成就就能取得成功,他不要出去开拓新的生意,它自己也会找上门来。

11.  live rough=live in difficult conditions (with few / no amenities) 在既不舒适的困难条件下生活

E.g.: We trekked through the jungle and had to live rough for ten days before we returned to camp.

我们在丛林中艰苦跋涉,在回到营地前的10天里,得在极不舒适的困难条件下生活。

12.  live something down=lead normal life until a misdeed is forgotten直至别人忘记了过错才过上正常生活

E.g.: It is now three years since I got drunk at a party but my wife still won’t let me live it down.

自从上次我在聚会上喝醉酒至今已3年了,但我的妻子仍对我进行限制。

13.  live through=remain alive through (a period of time), or experience and survive活过(某一段时间);经过…之后还活着,经历过

E.g.: The old woman is not likely to live through the winter.

那位老妇人不大可能活过这个冬天。

E.g.: He was among the few who managed to live through the experiences in the enemy prison camp.

或者离开战俘集中营的人很少,他是其中的一个。

14.  live to tell the tale=survive生存

E.g.: They must have been lost in the jungle for days, but unfortunately nobody lived to tell the tale.

他们一定在密林中迷失方向好几天了,不幸的是他们中没有一个人生还。

15.  live up to=equal a (good) example set by someday else和某人树立的(好)榜样相同

E.g.: His wife was so clever that he felt he could never live up to her.

他的妻子那么聪明,他感到自己怎么也配不上她。

16.  live wire=somebody who is energetic / enthusiastic 生龙活虎的人,精力充沛而有生气的人

E.g.: Wendy is the real live wire of the department who motivates all the others.

在这个部门里,文迪算得上是个活跃分子,对其他人很有激发力。

17.  live with=endure (something unpleasant) 忍受(不愉快的事)

E.g.: I injured a child through bad driving and I’ll have to live with that fact for the rest of my life.

18.  within / in living memory=within the lifetime of people still alive在一生中

E.g.: There has been some freak weather this year. It snowed in September for the first time in living memory,
