For new wine drinkers, walking into a wine shop can be intimidating. There are hundreds of bottles, brands, and types. Some cost just a few RMB, while others cost more than many people earn in a week. The key to becoming a confident wine shopper is to learn to read the label.

There are two types of wine labels. French and other " Old World " wines tell you where the grapes were grown and the wine was made. California and other " New World " wines tell you the type of grape. A French red wine might be labeled " Bordeaux " after the region where it was made. A nearly identical bottle of California wine might be labeled "Merlot" after the merlot grapes. A California wine label will sometimes tell you where the wine was grown or bottled in addition to the type of grape.

I will tell you a little about how to read a California wine label. The first thing you are likely to see is the brand name. In time, you may learn your favorite brand names, but it is important to read the rest of the label. Brand "ABC" might make a great merlot and an OK merlot, and both would have the "ABC" label.

Next you will probably see a year. If 95 percent of the grapes came from a single year, you will see the vintage year listed on the bottle. If it does not list the age, it is a non-vintage wine, which means the bottle contains wine from two or more years. Some non-vintage wines are good and others are boring. You will have to look for other clues on the label.

In the beginning you don't need to worry much about the vintage of California wines because the growing seasons are very similar every year and most moderately priced wines, under 100 RMB or so, are ready for drinking by the time they hit the store shelves.

Many wines can improve with age, particularly red wines and white wines that were aged in oak barrels.  An expensive Cabernet Sauvignon may need five years or longer for its flavors to mellow.

In the beginning, I would suggest starting with moderately priced wines to train your taste buds to learn the basic qualities of a wine. Then they will be ready to explore older, more expensive vintages.

Next time I will write more about reading a wine label.
