Notes on the special issue for Fumihiko Maki

This special issue for Fumihiko Maki includes the architecture design theories of the Japanese master architect and his works.

The three articles, namely, Notes on Collective Form, Power of Space and Floating Modernism, fully reveal the design philosophies of Fumihiko Maki from three perspectives of urban study, architectural design and architectural thinking orientation. These classical literatures, which were published in Japanese, were translated into Chinese after ARCHICREATION journal was awarded with authorization and introduced to the Chinese readers for the first time.

Notes on Collective Form is an excerpt from Investigations in Collective Form, a classic literature written by Fumihiko Maki in the famous Metabolism movement in Japan. It reveals the Japanese architects's studies, probes and statementswhen urban developing anxieties brought about by rapid economic growth half a century ago. And Fumihiko Maki is just one of the few architects in this group that has not only established the framework of theoretical studies but also successfully employed it in the practice in the past few decades. The Hillside Terrace Complex project in Daikanyama, which took more than 20 decades in design and construction, vividly illustrated the theory of collective form. The urban studies and practice contain marvelous historical experience and academic nutrition, which can probably bring some enlightenments for the Chinese architects in the similar historical stage as their Japanese counterparts were half a century ago.

Part of the Floating Modernism was explained in detail by Fumihiko Maki in his keynote speech at 2011 UIA, Tokyo. It not only elaborates the echoes between architecture and language, sceneries, collective form and humanism, but also introduces one way of thinking from architecturization to socialization; The ingenious part is how Mr. Fumihiko Maki reviews and expects modernism: “The modernism half a century ago was like a big ship that everyone hoped to board. However, the modernism today is no longer a big ship. Instead, it is now a huge sea. We are just floating in a scattered approach in the vast sea. It is because the current status of a vast expanse of water that makes the imagination and exploration from zero possible and this era extremely exciting, which posed a requirement for the new architectural review”.Such in-depth and everlasting words can only be written by an elderly who has travelled long in the history.

When planning this special issue, ARCHICREATION journal, JIA and Mr. Fumihiko Maki worked together to repeatedly discuss the content framework. Mr. Maki classifies his works into five themes, namely, Creating Collective Forms, Participating in Collective Forms, Focusing on the City, Focusing on the Landscape and Focusing on the Campus. It not only divides his works in categories. More importantly, it concludes the inherent features and characteristics of his works while demonstrating the close relations between practice and theoretical thoughts.

Except for the many commentary articles from US and Japan, we have also received comments from multiple Chinese architects represented by Mr. Guan Zhaoye. These comments will help deepen our perception of our close neighbor Japan decades ago by starting with China in its modern days.

Last but not least, our special thanks also go to Mr. Tetsuo Furuichi and Mr. Zhang Zenghui of JIA for their efforts on publishing of this special issue.
