What is a Blue Belt?
Written by Stan. Translated to Chinese by Roy

The blue belt represents the first step up the belt ladder in jiujitsu and it's the goal of most white belts starting out in the jiujitsu journey. Like every belt in jiujitsu, nothing comes easy (at least at my academy) and the student has to put in countless hours on the mat and show tremendous dedication. For a typical student training 3x a week, it should take about 2 years to achieve the blue belt. So what makes a blue belt?

The blue belt is your foundation belt, it is the base of the pyramid. A mindset of technical excellence begins at this belt, so the more technical of a blue belt you are, the more technical of a black belt you will become. At white belt, you are a blank piece of paper, you learn all the basic positions in jiujitsu, much like a child learning the alphabet. Once you reach blue belt you should have a working knowledge of all the basic positions in BJJ. You might not be an expert at the positions but you should have an idea of what you are aiming to achieve. As a blue belt, you should be able to demonstrate a working technical knowledge of the top game, bottom guard and the guard; and be able to apply this knowledge in a live sparring situation. Also, as a blue belt you should be able to demonstrate jiujitsu self defence techniques against the most common attacks on the street and also be able to demonstrate basic takedown skills.  At my academy, these requirements are all imbedded in our curriculum and students are monitored as they work their way up to blue belt. Another key to succeeding at blue belt is learning to relax, when we start in jiujitsu we are all tense and wrestle like there is no tomorrow. But if you learn to relax and keep things simple, you will accelerate your learning faster than any other piece of advise. Don't worry about tapping, it's just a feedback mechanism for you to fix parts of your game. And don't be one of those assholes who keeps track of who taps who, no one likes to train with them.

The blue belt is a very fun belt to be at. You soak up all the knowledge you can get so you can have the tools to personalise your game later on in your jiujitsu early. Don't specialise in a specific game too early, although this may help you win competitions at this stage, it will ultimately limit your understanding of jiujitsu later on. This is a stage to build your foundation, but a generalist.

Stan
