In the Dark Ages following the fall of the Roman empire, Britain was still in a state of division into factions. The Angles, Saxons, Jutes, and Celts dwelt admixed with each other and there lacked a sufficient force to unite them. Additionally,they were suffering under the constant oppression and exacting of tribute from Ireland.

当特里斯坦还很小时，有一回，康瓦耳郡的马克王把英格兰各割据势力领袖召集至一个地方，试图说服大家都来联合于他的麾下，共同反抗爱尔兰国王压迫。没想到的是爱尔兰人突袭了聚会场地，特里斯坦的父母均丧命于此突袭。马克王为营救几乎被爱尔兰士兵杀死的特里斯坦，他自己的一只手给敌人活生生砍断。马克王将特里斯坦带回康瓦耳郡，如待亲生子般养育他。

When Tristan is still a young boy,one time King Marke of Cornwall convenes a convocation of the heads of the separate factions to try to persuade them to unite under him as high king in order to resist the oppression of the Irish king. Unexpectedly the Irish make a surprise attack on them at the assembly point .Tristan's parents both are slaughtered during the raid  .In order to rescue Tristan who is within a razor's edge of being killed by an Irish soldier, one of King Marke's hands is brutally chopped off by the enemy. King Marke takes him back to Cornwall and raises him as a natural son.

数年过去了，特里斯坦长成大人。有一回，爱尔兰人再度到英格兰来肆意捉当地人去爱尔兰做奴隶。特里斯坦跟几个英格兰人一同埋袭这支爱尔兰商队，英勇地杀死了凶横的爱尔兰军头目莫赫尔特，然他自身也遭毒剑砍伤不省人事。马克王及其他的人皆以为特里斯坦已死去，就十分悲怜地将他搬入一艘船，把船烧起火苗，神情严峻目送船只慢慢飘去远方。

Years later, Tristan has grown to adulthood. One time the Irish return once more to Britain to wantonly seize the locals to carry away to Ireland and serve as slaves.  Tristan and a few other Cornish men together ambush the Irish slave caravan and he valiantly kills the brutal  Irish military leader Morholdt but he himself is also wounded by a poisoned sword and loses consciousness. King Marke and the others all assume that Tristan is already deceased so very sorrowfully they convey him into a boat, ignite it, and with solemn faces see off the boat as it slowly drifts further and further into the distance.

Isolde is the princess of Ireland and despite that she is absolutely reluctant, she is forcibly affianced to the Irish military leader Morholdt by her father. One day while she was strolling on the beach by the sea side with her maid Bragnae, she by chance sees the boat stranded on the shore that carried Tristan. So Isolde administers an antidote on the wounds of Tristan and revives him and secretly nurses him with extreme devotion until his wounds are wholly healed up in a wood cabin by the seashore.

二人相恋了，伊索尔德始终瞒着未把自己真实名字告诉特里斯坦。不几日，爱尔兰国王亦发现这只船，他命手下人沿海岸四下搜罗，特里斯坦与伊索尔德不得不依依惜别，只身回去到英格兰。

The two fall in love with each other but from beginning to end Isolde conceals her real name and does not disclose it to Tristan. After a few days the Irish king also discovers the boat and orders his lackeys to scour the seashore. So Tristan had to bid a reluctant farewell to Isolde and returned to Britain alone.

爱尔兰国王策划一出击败英格兰的阴谋，他扬言会把女儿伊索尔德作奖品嫁给全英骑士比武大会的胜利者。特里斯坦代表马克王作为参赛斗士，且不负众望为马克王赢得公主。但当公主撩起面纱露出面容时他完全怔住，这才意识到公主原是他自己的深爱的恋人。出于对马克王的忠诚，他护送伊索尔德回康瓦耳郡与马克王成亲。

The Irish King hatched a plot to defeat Britain. He proclaimed that he will wed his daughter as a prize to the victor of a tournament. Tristan as King Marke's proxy competes in the tournament.  Tristan is sent as champion on Marke’s behalf. Living up to the hopes of all, he wins the princess for King Marke. But at the instant the princess raised her veil and revealed her countenance, he was absolutely stunned only for it to light on him that the princess was his own deeply beloved paramour. Due to his allegiance to King Marke, he escorted Isolde back to Cornwall to be betrothed to King Marke.

While yet aware of the impropriety of it, Isolde and Tristan fail to harness the mounting escalating magical power of love.   The two engage in frequent clandestine rendezvous and drink deep of their pleasure.Their affair was by and by discerned by a traitorous Briton named Wictred . Wictred goes to Ireland and spawns a plot with the Irish king, in an attempt to use the affair between Isolde and Tristan to dethrone Marke with Wictred placed on the throne in exchange.

After a festivity attended by the Irish king, Wictred intentionally leads the British soldiers on a night horse ride to the spot where Tristan and Isolde are on a secret tryst. King Marke is extremely aghast by their tryst behind his back and gives the order to have the two arrested. Concurrently, the other Briton faction leaders part ways with Marke and go over to the Irish side, launching a seige on the Cornwall castle.

伊索尔德对马克王吐露她过去如何与特里斯坦相恋在先的实情，原先怒冲冲的马克王不由起了怜悯心，他放走特里斯坦与伊索尔德，还给一只船让他俩一同逃生。在河边，特里斯坦不愿如此离开，他不愿自己成为国家崩溃的祸首。

Isolde uncovers to Marke the truth of how she fell in love with Tristan prior to Marke. Marke, who was initially furious, couldn't help but feel sympathetic towards them. He had them set free and gave them a boat for them to escape together. On the shore Tristan refuses to flee in such a manner and be the cause of the fall of the kingdom.

此时，马克王的侄子梅罗特因嫉妒马克王任命特里斯坦为副手，也加入维克特里德谋反的队伍，他把维克特里德引到那条只有他和特里斯坦才晓得的秘道里，从那可径直入到城堡内。不料，维克特里德反目把梅罗特刺成重伤，把他的军队由秘道运进城堡里头。特里斯坦急遽经秘道返回城堡里，在一番拼杀中杀死了维克特里德，及时制止了维克特里德为敌人打开城堡大门。然而他也身负重创。特里斯坦拎着割下来的维克特里德的头颅，马克王站在城门呼吁英格兰各割据首领联合起来反抗爱尔兰，否则只会沦为被爱尔兰奴役压迫的下场。最后关头，英格兰割据首领决意倒戈反攻爱尔兰国王。

At that moment, Marke’s nephew Melot also joins in the ranks of Wictred's rebellion because he envies that Marke made Tristan his second  . He shows Wictred a secret passage which leads directly inside the castle that only he and Tristan knew of. Unepectedly Wictred turned on him, fatally stabbed Melot, and sneaked his army into the castle.Tristan rushed back to the castle by way of the secret passageway and killed Wictred in combat in time to stop him from opening the castle gates to the enemy. But he is also mortally wounded . Tristan held the severed head of Wictred while King Marke stood at the gate of the castle and  called out to the British lords to unite together to fight the Irish or only be reduced to the end of being oppressed by the Irish. At the crucial moment, the Briton faction chiefs decide to switch sides and attack the Irish king.

当一场恶战在英格兰与爱尔兰之间爆发，马克王带奄奄一息的特里斯坦去到水边与等候在那的伊索尔德相会，马克王随即折返麾兵作战。特里斯坦临终前喃喃：“我不知道生命是否比死亡更伟大，但是爱超越了这两者”，就躺在伊索尔德的怀里逝去了。特里斯坦死后，伊索尔德于他墓地旁栽植两株垂柳，它们的细枝子彼此绕缠，之后伊索尔德不知去向。马克王统一了英格兰，于和平中度过余生。

As a fierce battle between the British and Irish erupts, Marke takes Tristan who is on the verge of death to the waterside to meet the waiting Isolde. Marke immediately returns to lead the battle. Before he expires, Tristan mutters, " I don't know if life is greater than death. But love was more than either", and passes away lying in Isolde's arms. After Tristan's death, Isolde planted two willow trees beside his grave and their withes  grow intertwined. Afterwards, Isolde disappears forever. King Marke unites the British and lives the rest of his life in peace.

German composer Richard Wagner（1813-1883） also composed a three act opera entitled " Tristan und Isolde" based on the poet of the German Middle Ages Gottfried von Straßburg's(died c. 1210) narrative poem "Tristan",  whose plot differs from the movie plot. Wagner's opera makes this age-old legend more perfect and more enchanting.
