Radiation fears rise at Japan crisis plant | 日本核危机升级担忧加剧

Extremely high levels of radioactive substances have been detected in the building next to the No 2 reactor at Japan’s damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, raising concerns that efforts to stabilise the situation will be hampered.

日本受地震损害的福岛第一核电站(Fukushima Daiichi) 2号反应堆旁的建筑内检测到了严重超标的核辐射物质,进一步加剧了稳定核电站情况的努力将受阻的担忧。

The discovery was made even as it emerged that the No 3 reactor was not likely to have been breached, as feared earlier.

这一检测发现的消息传来之际,另有消息称,3号反应堆并不像之前担心的那样,可能已经发生泄漏。

Workers were evacuated from the No 2 reactor building on Sunday after radiation of 100,000 times the normal level was detected in water in the turbine housing unit, said Tokyo Electric Power, plant owner. Radioactivity at the surface of the water was more than 1,000mSv.

周日,东京电力公司(Tokyo Electric Power)表示,在2号反应堆涡轮机房内的积水中,检测到超出正常水平10万倍的核辐射,随后工人们撤离。积水表面的放射性强度超过了1000毫西弗。

The latest data indicate that the Japanese government and Tepco continue to face severe challenges in trying to contain leakage of radioactive substances and stabilise the reactors more than two weeks after a magnitude 9 earthquake and tsunami devastated the area.

这一最新数据表明,在9级地震及随后引发的海啸袭击日本东北地区2周多以后,日本政府与东电公司在遏制放射性物质泄漏和稳定核反应堆方面仍然面临严峻挑战。

Tepco said it did not know why the water had such high levels of radioactive substances but said it could not deny that the fuel rod might have broken.

东电公司表示,不清楚为什么积水中含有如此高浓度的放射性物质,但称无法排除燃料棒已经断裂的可能性。

Naoto Shimomura, a Tokyo University professor, said the radioactivity was likely to pose a big obstacle to efforts to contain the leaking of radioactive substances outside the plant.

东京大学(Tokyo University)教授下村直人(Naoto Shimomura)表示,这种放射性强度很可能对遏制放射性物质泄漏到核电站以外的努力造成重大障碍。

Tepco said the water would have to be drained before work to restart the internal cooling systems could be carried out.

东电公司称,在重启内部冷却系统的工作得以开始之前,必须将积水排净。

Japan’s Nuclear Industry Safety Agency also said on Sunday that the level of radioactive iodine in the seawater off the Fukushima coast near reactor No 3 had risen to 1,850 times the legally permissible level.

日本原子力安全保安院(Nuclear Industry Safety Agency)也于周日表示,福岛3号反应堆附近海水中放射性碘的浓度已升至法定允许水平的1850倍。

Monitoring by Nisa and Tepco showed the level of iodine-131 had risen again after falling on Saturday to 750 times the legally permissible level from 1,250 times that level on Friday.

原子力安全保安院与东电公司共同进行的监测显示,碘131的浓度再次上升。周五检测到的碘131浓度是允许水平的1250倍,周六曾降至750倍。

Yukio Edano, chief cabinet secretary, said in a televised interview on Sunday morning that “a level of progress has been made in preventing the condition from worsening” at the crippled power plant.

日本内阁官房长官枝野幸男(Yukio Edano)在周日上午接受电视采访时表示,“防止(受损核电站)情况恶化的努力取得了一定程度的进展”。

He said it was clear that water that could have been inside the No 3 reactor had leaked, but said the reactor itself had not been breached. He added that “the possibility is low” that the high level of iodine-131 in the seawater would have a negative effect on marine life, since it would be diluted by the vast amount of water in the ocean.

他说,可能是3号反应堆内部的积水出现了泄漏,但表示反应堆本身并没有发生泄漏。他还表示,海水中碘131浓度超标对海洋生物产生负面影响的“可能性很低”,因为海洋中总量庞大的海水将产生稀释作用。

On Saturday, China said it had detected traces of radiation from the damaged nuclear plant. “Infinitesimal traces” of iodine-131 had been recorded in three counties at the north-eastern tip of the country’s territory, the Ministry of Environmental Protection said.

上周六,中国表示检测到了来自受损核电站的微量放射性物质。中国环境保护部在中国国土东北端的三个县检测到“极微量”的碘131。

Xinhua, the official news agency, quoted Beijing residents saying they felt safe as they were “far away”.

中国官方的新华社援引北京市居民的话称,他们感觉很安全,因为“离得非常远”。
