Reflection on Study Tour in University of Arizona

A clearer and more profound comprehension of us and the world around would be rendered attainable for us to apply a retrospective means when we try to understand present things. On writing this reflection, I’m very curious about what I’d think and feel at the sight of it again ten years later from now.

First, to be sure, the sweetest things to initiate my journey of reminiscence would definitely be associated with my best friends in this group whom I know better and better now. Tagore, best-known poet from India and also Nobel Prize Winner for literature in 1913, once said:”. Once we dreamt that we were strangers. We wake up to find that we were dear to each other.” What he said enlightens us that the more ready and hearty you are to embrace other people, the more possible it is for your circles of friends to grow, which would certainly broaden our vision, soothe our pains and add color to our life blank otherwise.

The second thing that would cross my mind, speaking of the highlights of this tour, is a rich knowledge of English learnt from those excellent professors and a superb manifestation of the most trendy English teaching methodology, despite whose considerable varieties, they have one thing in common that it is students, instead of teachers, who play a dominant role in class without a so-called absolute answer or approach to certain questions proposed by their instructors , hence the cultivation and development of students’ independent and critical thinking.

The third thing to impress me deeply is Americans’ hospitality and sincerity and politeness. The polite expressions, such as “Good morning!”, “Have a nice day!”, “Excuse me!”, “After you!”, are what I often hear here . A more convincing example could be made that whether traffic lights at the crossroads be red, yellow or green, those car drivers would politely let pedestrians cross the road first.

The last but not least things are those lessons presented by those prominent professors, among whom I’d like to mention passionate and highly logical Dr. Amy KimmeHea who teaches us technical writing ,Prof. Bill Epstein with a strong artistic temperament specializing in literature , creative lecturer Chuck Phillips and earnest and wise Professor Jun Liu with a strict teaching attitude.

To be more specific, what lessons have I learnt from these outstanding people ?  It occurs to me that , during my class, more time and room should be kept for students for their own thinking and two-way discussion ,even debate rather than one-way instruction for the simple reason that education is not supposed to be spoon-feeding, but rather a kind of communication lighting students’ fire for knowledge. As Yeats once said, “Education is not a filling of a pail, but a lighting of a fire.”

The second thing I’d like to mention is my inclination and determination, when back to my school in China, to reorient the courses in my department all toward real situations and happenings in daily life in the western cultures, especially those courses related with English listening and speaking. Taking “western movies” section in our spoken English curriculums as an example, its teaching goals should be more than mere comprehension and appreciation of some clips extracted from some western classic movies and practicing traditional and stereotyped role-play activities in class. Instead, we have to acquaint students with what expressions are most frequently used in a real movie-seeing situation in English-speaking countries and how to break the ice between those strangers and them by talking about some movies. In a word, all courses about oral English teaching are expected to be of communicative competence orientation.

‘    Besides, Prof. Jun Liu’s remarkable presentation concerning ELT informed me that there is no such thing as standard English against the background of the increased globalization and ethnic integration , illustrated by the statistics of over 90% English speakers all over the world speak non-London or New York English. Therefore, we have to shift our previous focus on mere so-called standard British or American pronunciation and basic daily communication, say, greetings, to strong adaptability to different accents and stronger communicative competence on more profound issues, such as global warming, American political and economical policies, etc.

Because of the thoughtful arrangements made by school authorities,we have enjoyed a full and pleasurable time here, although it is only a 13-day trip. But it would be better to have some modifications to our curriculums. Due to our tight schedule, .it is not feasible to cover all details in some subject, so it would be better if our distinguished professors choose to focus on a topic to conduct a depth analysis and case study. What’s more, the exhaustion of our energy by so tight a schedule has lessened our learning effects. I hope next time it would be taken into account by NOS and school authorities as well.

‘Goodbye’ is sad, it’s another way of saying ‘I’ll never see you again’ . But why not think a little differently? The people you will never see again will continue with their own lives, so wouldn’t it be better to wish them ‘Good luck‘? Or if it’s a place where you spent a lot of time, how about ‘thanks for the memories‘. Sometimes, it’s difficult to say goodbye to our things, like old clothes for example, but even if it sounds silly it really helps to think ‘thanks, and now you can go to someone who will find a better use for you‘.

This weekend, I will be leaving for home. Now I have sympathy with what an author once said : “It’s easier to not buy something, than to let go of something old. It’s easier to meet new people, than to say goodbye to friends. It’s easier to visit a new place, than to leave a familiar place.”

Farewell,America ! Farewell, my lovely 13 days with abundant knowledge, gentle breeze, bright sunshine, delighted laughter and sober reflection.
