How Rich Are You
By Robert Frank
In 2007, I published the first version of what I call The Rich-O-Meter.
It was a simple chart that showed the rankings for various income groups in the U.S. For instance, you needed $87,000 to be in the top 10%, or $120,000 to be in the top 1%.
I followed up with a Rich-O-Meter 2.0 for wealth, showing the total net worth required to be in the top 20%, 10% and so on.
Both posts continue to be popular, suggesting that readers have an endless fascination with the question of “what is rich?” and with their ranking on the American wealth ladder.
In an effort to provide even more specific rankings, The Wealth Report is now proud to introduce the Rich-O-Meter 3.0, also known as the “Richer Scale” or the “How Rich Are You” Index. It appears on the right column of the blog, above the “Most Popular” list.
The Meter is simple, easy to use and highly gratifying – or
humbling depending on your income and psychology.
All you have to do is plug in your household income or household
net worth and click the “rank me” button.
The data is not perfect (governments and researchers have various ways of measuring incomes and wealth). And the data changes year to year. But we will continue to refine the meter as we get better data.
For now, enjoy the ranking and send along suggestions for improvements!
