Chapter3 Encounters with Manners(遭遇礼仪)

My uniform was itchy and hair was pulled up too tight.

The scalp was tingling from extreme pressure. The white ironed blouse stuck to my back and was tucked into the strict, gray skirt. The end of summer in California was still dry and hot. Wearing a large navy blazer that went down to my thigh didn't help block the heat. The new, conservative, black dress shoes felt stuffy. I was rigid and uncomfortable. My feet still ached from the morning orientation and the tour of the school.

Waking up at seven, I showered and wore what my parents thought best: khaki pants and a clean white shirt. With some complaint, I was allowed to wear my sandals instead of the red, doll shoes my parents had chosen. I raced out the door with a giddy delight in my stomach,

"You're going to be cool. You're going to make them all love you. You're going... you're going to fall over and make a fool of yourself." I whispered a confidence chant, but failed miserably.

At 8 o'clock, I waited in the portico of the Administration building outside of Dean Moore's office. There, I was to pick up my information packet, supposedly filled with my class schedules and the next week's events.

The poles and walls were covered by crawling plants blooming white and purple flowers the size of my thumb. The pond right outside of the Administration building bubbled softly. It didn't seem like a high school to me, but more of some prominent private colleges I visited before.

A girl next to me chattered about her family. She came from Boston and was boarding at the school.

"... and I already know who my roommate is! We were friends since second grade."

"Which dorm are you living in?" another girl inquired.

"I'm placed in Bluestone, but I wanted to be in South Solaris."

"Why? I would want to be in Bluestone. It has larger rooms!"

"But think of the walk. That large hill can kill anybody while carrying a twenty-pound backpack. Think about it!"

"I guess you're right."

"And also, I heard that Bluestone is haunted," her voice lowered.

Just then a pretty woman attired in a flowery skirt and short-sleeved blouse came out of the building, holding a large box of manila envelopes. Her blonde hair was cropped and fashionably arranged to look messily elegant.

All of us started to line up. "Hi, Everyone! Don't you girls look sharp." She beamed at us with her pearly white teeth. "I'm Ms Tarasov, the secretary of Ms Moore. I want to welcome you and your parents to the orientation!" Her voice was mildly sweet. "When you come to the front, just say your last name and then first name, and I'll get your info packet."

I peeped inside my information packet, as a bunch of students walked to the dining hall for the next presentation. There was an inch thick pile of paper including my schedule and my school event calendar. I looked at it with a dizzy sensation creeping into my brain.
