“DON'T EVER GIVE UP” Part 1

I am so glad that you have joined us on this broadcast
I hope that you can join us next week at the same time on this radio dial
Today and for the next several weeks, I will be talking to you about the importance of never giving up
The Bible said that in the last days the love of many will grow cold
That because of persecutions, some will be tempted to give up
But if you are rooted in Christ, you will always blossom where you are planted
It doesn’t matter where you are planted
If like Joseph you are put in Pharaoh’s prison, you will rise to be the prime minister of Egypt
If like Daniel, you are put in a den of lions, you will rise to be in charge of the Persian empire
If you are put in the fiery furnace, you will rise to testify to the king
If you are put in the desert you will bloom
Why
Because God is with you
Paul’s second epistle to Timothy tells us that
It offers encouragement to stand in tough times and in hostile environments
This is a very powerful and moving epistle
According to the book of Acts, we know that the apostle Paul was imprisoned in Rome
For the first time for at least two years
He was falsely accused of inciting insurrection against Rome
But then he was freed for the lack of evidence
Then he went to Spain to preach to gospel
At that time there was a great persecution against Christians
So when he came back to Rome he was arrested again
But by this time, Paul has aged
And he sat in a very dark dungeon
Which became the road to death
And if you visit Rome today, you can see that dungeon
You can see the small room with no opening except a small hole in the center of the ceiling from which food and water were dropped down to him
They had no window through which Paul could see the outside world
Oh, it must have been cold and damp especially in the winter time
We don’t know how long the apostle Paul was in that miserable place
But we know that from that dungeon he was led to the place of his execution on the
There he lay down his gray head upon a great stone
And the executioners  axe decapitated him his head
And at that moment Paul was absent from the body and present with the Lord
And just before his death, Paul wrote this moving works to his trusted disciple and friend, Timothy
God in his mercy preserved this second epistle to Timothy for us for more than 1900 years
So that you and I today may know it and be encouraged in the midst of defeat
So that you and I may find joy in the midst of despair
Paul knew Timothy very well
And he knew his strengths and he knew his weaknesses
Paul knew that Timothy like most of us was prone to self-pity
Prone to discouragement
And was tempted to give up
Timothy was apparently a timid person and not very courageous
People around him tended to take advantage of his timid temperament
As Paul contemplated his own death
He looked to Timothy to stand up
And battle for the truth of the gospel
Paul urges Timothy to never, never, never give up in the battle for the truth
In fact, this is the message of this letter
Don’t ever give up
This is an urgent appeal from the dying apostle
Don’t ever give up
Timothy must do four things
In chapter one
He must uphold the truth of the gospel
In chapter two
He is not to be afraid to suffer for the gospel
In chapter three
He is to be steadfast and faithful even when others falter and fail
In chapter four
He is to proclaim the truth with such urgency that some may think that he is fanatic
I believe that God is calling a whole generation of young Timothy’s
Young Timothy’s who by the power of God’s Holy Spirit will not be ashamed of the truth of the gospel
Young Timothy’s who will guard it until Jesus comes back
If you look around you
You see people in the church denying the truth of the gospel
So in chapter one, Paul counts himself among the apostles
He too had met the risen Christ
He too was commissioned by Christ to preach the gospel
And so he can tell his son in the faith the following things
He said he is praying for him day and night
He said he remembers Timothy with tears of sympathy
He remembers Timothy’s strong faith
He remembers how Timothy was commissioned to preach the gospel
He remembers how Timothy received the gift of the Holy Spirit
These must be all encouragement for Timothy
Are you discouraged today
Remember that someone is praying for you
God is watching over you
He will never forsake you or forget you
Shake off your discouragement
Don’t let your discouragement keep you down
Don’t let fear paralyze you
Don’t let timidity imprison you
Don’t let the lack of courage control your life
Paul explains to Timothy the following
Fear is of the devil
And the devil is a liar
And because the devil is a liar
He will dress up fear in different clothes
He may present fear as being wise
He will present fear as being cautious
Or as it is not your calling to witness
Jesus often said, fear not
Fear not life, why
Because I am the way the truth and the life
Fear not death

Why
Because I am he who lived and was dead, behold, I am alive forever more
Fear not the unknown
Why
Because I am the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end
Paul learned a very important lesson in his life
What was it
That the best antidote to fear
The best antidote to fear is to trust the God who is in full control of your life
Let me tell you a quick story
When I was a little boy
There was a boy who was bigger than me
And he always wanted to fight me
And I didn’t like to fight him because he was bigger than me
One day when I was wa lking with my big brother
I walked straight up to that boy
And I punched him in the stomach
Where did I get this courage
I had my big brother walking with me
I knew that when that boy saw my big brother he would be afraid and he would not hit me
The same thing happens in your Christian walk
Satan can frighten you when you are alone
But you have Jesus with you
You have your big brother Jesus with you
And you can punch him in the nose
Have you stopped being effective for God
It is because you have begun to believe Satan’s lie
Are you afraid of doing something great for God
You must have believed Satan’s lie
It is one thing to fail
It is something else to stay down in your defeat
Remember the Bible said
No weapon that is formed against you will prosper
The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear
Remember this
The devil may bark
But he can’t bite
Why
Jesus knocked his teeth out on the cross of calvary
The devil may roar
But that’s the only noise he can make
He is toothless lion
And that is why Paul is telling us in II Timothy never give up
He tells us that God has not given us the spirit of fear, but the spirit of power, the spirit of love, and self-control
I hope that this message has been straight to your heart
It comes from our heart
Believers all over the world are tempted to give up
And it is the number one temptation for ineffectiveness in the ministry
People may be going through the motions of ministry but have given up inside
I am praying that God will use this word to revive your spirit
That you may renew your covenant with the Lord
And start a new road to ministry and service for the kingdom of God
And that your life will be truly blessed of God
I want to pray with you to that end
Heavenly Father
We thank you for these words from the apostle Paul
We thank you that they are relevant today
We thank you that they are words of encouragement
And we pray for everyone who is listening to us right now
That they will be encouraged from your word
That the Holy Spirit will give them the strength and the power to serve with courage
That the Holy Spirit will give them the strength to stand up for the truth
And that they may never give up
Until Jesus comes back
Amen
