“THE CROSS” - Part 09 '

Hello our listening friends, we are glad you joined us once more
We pray that you are learning much about those seven words from the cross
And today we are going to look at the one thing that God cannot see
I want to begin by quoting one man who was an atheist
This man was a historian
His name is H.G. Wells
He said he was repelled by Jesus
And he called him the image of virtue, this terrible and incomprehensible Galilean
Wells is not the first one or the last one to reject Jesus Christ
He found his purity and sinlessness to be challenging
We saw in the last three broadcasts that the government of the time abandoned Jesus
Organized religion repudiated Jesus
The crowd reviled Jesus
His friends had fled and forsaken him
And today we see the ultimate abandonment
In the past three broadcasts we saw how at the third hour which is about 9 o’clock in the morning
While Jesus was suspended between heaven and earth he as the high priest forgave the sins of his transgressors
But that’s not surprising
Then about mid-morning and he looked to a repentant criminal hanging on the other cross next to him and he made him a promise
Today you shall be with me in paradise
That is not surprising
Then in the middle of the day, Jesus looked upon his mother Mary and the disciple whom he loved, John and he made provision for his mother
That is not surprising
Today we will see how about high noon, or the 9th hour
When the brightness of the day turned into the blackness of midnight
Jesus made the fourth statement from the cross
Let us just repeat again
Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing
It is not surprising
Today you shall be with me in paradise
That is not surprising
Woman behold your son, son behold your mother
That is not surprising
But the fourth one is puzzling
It is this
“Eloi, Eloi, Lama sabachthani?”
It is very surprising
Eloi, Eloi, Lama sabachthani is confusing
Eloi, Eloi, Lama sabachthani arches over the previous three statements as well as the next three statements
Turn with me please to Matthew 27:45
I hope that if you do not have a Bible that you will write to us and we will get you one
Let us read Matthew 27 together…
Now I want you to reflect on this passage under two headings
First
第一,
The three hours of darkness that lit up the world
Secondly
第二,
The moment of desertion that redeemed the world
You know how bright the sun is during the high noon
The brightness of the sun is so dazzling
It is blinding
So imagine in the midst of the brightness of the high noon it becomes as dark as the middle of the night
And it was not only for a moment or two
It wasn’t only for an hour or two
But it was for three hours
This was God’s response to those who loved darkness better than light for the Scripture says the following
The light came into the world and the world comprehended not
It is as if God is saying, you love darkness, that’s what darkness is like
It is as if God was saying, you prefer your way, that’s the end of it
It is as if God was saying, you hated the light that my son came to bring I will grant you your request
It is as if God was saying, you opt for the darkness of sin and shame, you have it
But there is a deeper meaning to these three hours of darkness than this
The three hours of darkness were a fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy
When the high priest went into the holy of holies once a year to atone for the sin of the people
That place had to be dark so that no one could see the holy things and what is happening at the ark of the covenant
When Christ our high priest was ready to take his own blood into the heavenly tabernacle, nature darkened
So that the unsympathetic eye could not see
In the Old Testament
When the law of God was given on Mt. Sinai
There were thick dark clouds on that mountain and all stood at a distance
This thick darkness is symbolic of our inability to keep the Law of God
For none of us has been able to keep that Law
When Christ who is the light of the world went into that darkness
When the one who perfectly obeyed the Law of God entered into darkness
That darkness of our inability to keep the Law wrapped him up as one who would be wrapping himself in a cloak
There were three hours of darkness that lit up the world
Christ died in darkness
Secondly
第二,
We see the moment of desertion that has redeemed the world
After hanging on the cross for six hours
About the 9th hour or 3 o’clock in the afternoon
Piercing this darkness of midnight came that cry
Eloi, Eloi, Lama sabachthani
These are the very words that came out of the mouth of the Lord Jesus
On the surface we have these words translated, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
The word here means to leave someone in the lurch or to abandon someone
And that is why I told you earlier that this fourth statement from the cross was the most surprising of all
How can the father and the Son who have eternally been in unity be separated
How can the Father and the Son who have always been one, now become separated
Please listen very carefully to what I am going to tell you
Because if you understand the dept of these words we could understand the very center of what the cross is all about
If you understand this moment in history, you will understand the very core of the Christian faith
Again turn with me to Psalm 22 verse 1
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Jesus was quoting this Psalm
This Psalm is a prophecy of the cross
As the Lord began to experience the derision, the dislocation, and the dehydration of the cross, he recalls the words of Psalm 22 with meticulous accuracy
In verse 7 of Psalm 22
All who see me mock me, they hurl insults, shaking their heads saying, he trusted in the Lord let the Lord rescue him
1,000 years before Christ we have a literal prediction of what happened in Matthew 27:39
When the crowd reviled Jesus at the cross and said he saved others, let him save himself
This was the fulfillment of Psalm 22
Let’s look at it
Psalm 22:14 says
I am poured out like water and all my bones are out of joint
As Christ’s body racked with pain, that became the dislocation of the cross
In verse 15 of Psalm 22 it says
My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth
That’s the dehydration which we see in John 19:28 when he said I thirst
In Palm 22 verse 16
The word of piercing
They have pierced my hands and feet
This was the foreshadowing of Matthew 27:49
In Psalm 22 verse 18
They have divided my garments and cast lots for my clothing
That was fulfilled in Matthew 27:35
Let me ask you this
How can anyone doubt the cross when you see that centuries before it took place it was predicted with such accuracy
I have met people from around the world who have come to believe in Jesus Christ because of the accuracy of the Old Testament prophecy regarding Christ
How can anyone doubt the accuracy and the infallibility of the Scriptures when it was predicted 1,000 years earlier
If you are one who doubts the Word of God to be the absolute truth, I submit to you that you have never gone to the trouble of examining it for yourself
Well you may ask, how come Jesus only recited verse one
Well the answer is that most of the people had committed all of these Psalms to memory and all you need to do is mention the first verse and the rest immediately comes to mind
Just in case you begin to think that Psalm 22 is all about defeat and suffering you need to read verses 27 and 28
All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord, for the kingdom is the Lords, he shall rule over the inhabitants
Psalm 22 is a complete prophecy of the death and the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ
Eloi, Eloi, Lama sabachthani obviously is a word of prayer
Strange as it is, this is the only time that the Father did not answer the prayer of the Son
When Jesus was baptized in the River Jordan
The Holy Spirit came and testified with a word from the Father
This is my beloved Son
When Jesus was on the Mount of Transfiguration with Moses and Elijah and the three disciples
The Father said, this is my Son, hear Him
But at the cross when the crowd was reviling him
When he needed a word from the Father the most, he was deserted
Why
Some of the tradition would tell you that it is a blasphemy to say that the Father deserted the Son
And they will give you an elaborate explanation
Others who do not believe in the resurrection explain this as nothing but psychological depression
Others would tell you that it is his imagination that the Father had forsaken him
Just as we sometimes feel that the Father has forsaken us
But none of these are correct
But the reality is that this prayer we are looking at is the very heart and necessity of the cross
Listen very carefully to what really happened
At that very moment the sin of humanity rained down on Christ
So much so that he experienced the very hell of being separated from the Father
And for the first time from eternity, the Son knew the wrath and the separation from the Father
The Father could not look at the Son while he was carrying your sin and my sin
The Father’s eyes are purer than to look on sin
Proverbs 8:30 tells us that from eternity, the Son had delighted in the presence of the Father
There was never a second during which there was no harmony between the Father and the Son
Harmony in words
Harmony in thought
Harmony in deeds
Yet for that moment of desertion when all your sins and mine were heaped upon him, for the first time, he looked up to the heavens, and he saw not God the Father, but God the judge
This is the first time that Jesus did not use the word of familiarity, Abba
The only time
He used the term, Eloi, which indicates God the Sovereign, or God the Judge, or God the All-Filled One
The pain that Jesus experienced as a result of his separation from the Father we could never, never, never grasp, comprehend, or understand
All of this so that when you and I come to him in repentance and faith we can receive forgiveness
And that is why Paul tells us in II Corinthians chapter 5
He who knew no sin became sin for us that we may become the very righteousness of God in Him
After the price was paid
In six hours, Jesus dismissed his spirit
That word here has the meaning of a military commander who dismissed someone from his presence
He was in complete command of his life
He dismissed his spirit when he wanted to
He dismissed his spirit after he paid the price for sin
For earlier, Jesus said, I have authority to lay down my life and I have authority to take it up again
The normal lingering dying on the cross would take forty-eight hours before the crucified man would die
In this case, it took six hours
And that is why the soldiers were surprised and they did not have to break his legs like they did with the others
And he studied the torture of the crucifixion
Dr. Rector concluded that our Lord Jesus Christ ultimately died of a broken heart
He cited some instance in his research when the sac around the heart burst as a result of extreme agony
When our Lord Jesus Christ was pierced in his side there was blood and water
Which was evidence that the cry of the moment and the pain of the hour, Jesus died of a heart that had literally had been broken
While Dr. Rector’s speculation is right physically, it is certainly right spiritually
For in the moment Jesus said, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me, he paid the penalty of sin
Please listen to me very carefully as I’m ready to conclude
Jesus died in darkness that those who believe in Him may live in light
Jesus died in silence that all those who believe in him may forever have a word from God
Jesus died forsaken that you might be accepted
Jesus died rejected that I might be received
Have you received him?
Have you received his death on the cross to be for you?
Have you received his payment for the penalty of your sin- to be for your sin?
If you have not done so, I pray that you will do so today
And thus you’ll be assured of heaven
Until next time, I wish you God’s richest blessing
