August: Osage County

Meryl Streep

The great gift of human beings is that we have the power of empathy.

  • empathy [ˈɛmpəθi] (n.)

Example: The nurse should try to develop empathy between herself and the patient.

Interestingly, young people don't come to you for advice. Especially the ones who are related to you.

Julia Roberts

I'm just an ordinary person who has an extraordinary job.

  • ordinary [ˈɔrdnˌɛri] (adj.)

Example: It was just an ordinary weekend for us.

  • extraordinary [ɪkˈstrɔːrdəneri] (adj.)

Example: Mariah Carey is an extraordinary singer.

It's funny when people say, 'I don't think Julia likes me.' Honey, if I don't like you, you're going to know about it.

AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY tells the dark, hilarious and deeply touching story of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose lives have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Midwest house they grew up in, and to the woman who raised them.

  • diverge [daɪˈvə:dʒ] (v.)

Example: Needless to say, theory and practice sometimes diverged.

  • dysfunctional [dɪsˈfʌŋkʃənl] (adj.)

Example: He was born in a dysfunctional family.

Charles Aiken: So, I'm curious. When you say you don't eat meat, you mean you don't eat meat of any kind.

Jean Fordham: Right

Charles Aiken: Is that for health reasons?

Jean Fordham: Well, when you eat meat you ingest an animal's fear.

Violet Weston: Ingest what? Its fur?

Jean Fordham: Fear!

  • ingest [ɪn'dʒest] (v.) 1.

Example: She ingested large amounts of information very quickly.

Example: The drug is more easily ingested in pill form.

Jean Fordham: So when you eat meat you're ingesting all of that fear that the animal felt when it was slaughtered to make food.

Charles Aiken: You mean, I been eating fear, what, three times a day for 60 years? I guess it was just how I was raised. Somehow it doesn't seem like a legitimate meal unless there's some meat somewhere… Ohhh!

Karen Weston: Oh, what is it?

Charles Aiken: Ohhh!

Karen Weston: What's the matter?

Ivy Weston: You okay, Uncle Charlie?

Charles Aiken: I got a big bite of fear! It never tasted so good!

  • slaughter [ˈslɔtɚ] (v.) 1.

Example: Lack of chicken feed means that chicken farms are having to slaughter their stock.

Example: Hundreds of people were slaughtered by the invaders.

  • legitimate [ləˈdʒɪtəmɪt] (adj.) 1.

Example: The government will not seek to disrupt the legitimate business activities of the defendant.

Example: It's not clear that the letter is legitimate; it may be a forgery.
