Enter the Shaolin Temple!

Come check out Shaolin Temple, a kung fu masterpiece that inspired more than just future martial artists.

Several years ago, I spent several weeks traveling around central China. As one does when in the region, I visited the Shaolin temple, and perhaps as many Americans do when visiting this particular temple, I walked around enjoying the ancient scenery, soundtracked by the sounds of Wu Tang Clan's seminal Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).

Hip-hop fans know, though, that rap's biggest supergroup was more influenced by the idea of the Shaolin temple than by the place itself, which they had never visited when they crafted their landmark debut album. They were influenced by the Shaolin of film; in films like 1982's Shaolin Temple, action, music, and kung fu come together organically. Watching this film, it's not hard to see where RZA got some of his ideas.

Anyway, rap trivia aside -- you'll have to excuse me the indulgence -- Shaolin Temple is a great film, and if you live in Beijing, you should come to the Jianghu Bar next Tuesday because we're showing it there! Check out the full release and details below:

Coinciding with the release of Jackie Chan’s latest film, Shaolin (新少林寺), The World of Chinese movie series is proud to present a special screening of the original 1982 film.

See teenaged Jet Li starring in his very first film, the amazingly original musical martial-arts epic, SHAOLIN TEMPLE (少林寺, 1982). The very first kung fu film made in Communist China, this features the wide-open pastures of Socialism, the frolicking lambs of freedom, and seriously awesome kung fu.

The cast is crammed with China's masters of Wushu. The film was shot entirely on Shaolin temple grounds. And Jet Li? Well, at age 19, he manages some of the best drunken-style boxing ever captured on film.

Don't miss this landmark flick -- it made Jet Li a star, was a mad hit at the box office, and revived the Chinese mainland's love for crazy kung fu! Jackie Chan's remake comes out in January, but you've got to see the original too. There's nothing else like it.
