1 Is there an absolute joy in which it has no side effect in this world?

这世上真有绝对无副作用的快乐吗?

2 Is there anything that can maintain life exactly for a long time in this world?

这世上真有一件东西,可以准确无误地,长期维持保护人的生命吗?

3 In this world what should I do, what should I believe, what should I avoid, what should I seek, what should I accept, what should I refuse, what should I love and what should I hate?

生活在这个世界上,我应该做什么,应该相信什么,又应该避免做什么? 我应该追求什么,应该接受什么,又应该拒绝什么? 我应该爱什么,又应该恨什么呢?

天下有至乐无有哉?有可以活身者无有哉?今奚为奚据?处?就奚去?奚乐奚恶?

4 In this world, whats the value that I should treasure? Is it position, long life, or kindness?

这世上什么样的东西才是最值得我珍惜的? 是地位,是长寿,还是仁善呢

5 I know that common people prefer to health, gourmet food, splendid clothes, beauty and music than poverty, humble work, early death and malady.

我知道一般人都喜欢健康、美食、华衣、漂亮的容貌及音乐等等,最不喜欢的是贫穷、卑贱的工作、寿以及恶疾。

6 They are afraid of loosing their health, no opportunity for enjoying gourmet food, no beauty, and no music for fun. When they cant get these that they like, their mood fall down to the bottom and they feel that they are unlucky, complaining all.

人们较为担心的是自己的健康,还有是否有机会尝到美食,是否有漂亮的衣服穿,是否有美人依偎在怀,是否有音乐助兴。当他们得不到这些他们所热切盼望得到的东西时,他们的情绪就立刻跌入谷底,开始怨天尤人,甚至归咎于一切都是因为自己的运气不好。

7 In truth, these people who led by the outward material are very stupid.

老实说,这种被外界物质牵着鼻子走的人是极其愚蠢的。

夫天下之所尊者,富贵寿善也;所乐者,身安厚味美服好色音声也;所下者,贫贱恶也;所苦者,身不得安逸,口不得厚味,形不得美服,目不得好色,耳不得音声。若不得者,则大忧以惧,其为形也亦愚哉

8 Those rich men are desperate to work. They are busy and nervous in accumulating greedily the wealth that they cant use up in their whole life.

这世上的有钱人,他们没命地工作,每天紧张兮地,贪婪地囤积一些他们一辈子也花用的财物。

9 Their way to seek sensory consoling is very shallow.

他们追求感官慰藉的作法是极其肤浅的。

夫富者苦身疾作,多积财而不得尽用,其为形也亦外矣

10 In order to protect position, the man with high position consider all days what he should do and not do to please the officials of higher level.

那些处在高位的人,为了保障其职位,一天到晚都在伤脑筋,到底应该这样做,还是不应该那样做,如此煞费思量,目的全是为了取悦上司。

11 Their lives are very unstable, because they would be dismissed and replaced at any time.

这些人的生活是极其不稳定的,因为他们随时都有被撤换的可能。

12 A series of misfortune follows a mans birth.

人一生下来,一连串的不如意就紧随着而来。

夫贵者,夜以继日,思虑善否,其为形也亦疏矣!人之生也,与忧俱生

13 The older is aging day by day. Everyday they have to stand with death so they cant help but feel sad.

年纪大的老人,他们在老化、衰败的过程中渡过了一天又一天,每天与死亡的威胁为伍,心情郁悒自是在所难免。

14 Alas! This is such a miserable scene!

! 这是一幅多么可悲的情景啊!

寿者惛惛久忧不死,何苦也!其为形也亦远矣!

15 These people get lost so far and so deep in seeking for the enjoyments of material. These people are brave in deed. Their stories, wealth, power and reputation are appraised wonderful. However, those nice things cant make them immortal. Whats more, it is not sure that those that common people think well are really good and those that common people think bad are really bad.

这些人在追求物质享受的道路上,是已经迷失的够远、够深了。这些勇敢的烈士们,他们的事迹,他们的财富、权位、名誉等在世人的评价中都是极其美好的;可是 这些所谓美好的事物,却无法保证他们能得以不死。更何况,他们自己也不能确定,世人所认为美好的就真的是好,或相反的真的是坏。

16 Those common people think are good but cant protect their life.

若说它们好,可这样却也无法保住他们的命。

烈士为天下见善矣,未足以活身

17 Some people think those are bad but the order and economic activities of the society are maintained because of them. The environment created by those is the fundamental where many people live in, so those are good in this respect of consideration.

若说它们不好。可又因为它们的缘故,社会经济活动兴旺,社会秩序也才得以维持。它们所创造出的环境,让许多人因而活命,所以就这层意义上而言,它们看起来又似是好的。

未知善之诚善邪?不善邪?若以为善矣,不足活身;以为不善矣,足以活人。

18 I am watching the conducts of common people in this world. The common people think that what they have done are all seeking for joy but after close analysis, I dont know what their so-called joy is a real joy or nothing but a kind of illusion, or a presentation with serious side effect.

我观察现今世人的许多行为,发现他们都认为自己是在追求快乐。可是经过仔细分析,我实在不明白他们的所谓快乐,是真的快乐,还是仅只是一种幻觉,一种有严重后遗症的表象。

19 I see common people scrambling for their joy. I truly find these joys hanging high as the goal sought by people. They who obtain the joys say they feel happy and comfortable. Instead, I am not able to experience throughout the so-called joys they seek for. Why do they feel happy with the joys? Why do they feel unhappy without the joys?

我看世人都争先恐后地追求他们所谓的快乐。我也确实发现,这些快乐是高高的悬挂在那儿,成为人们努力奋斗的目标。得到它们的人都说好快乐、好享受。然而我却完全没有办法体会,他们所谓的快乐,有什么快乐可言,得不到它们的话,又有什么好觉得不快乐的。

吾观夫俗之所乐举群趣者,誙誙然如将不得已,而皆曰乐者吾未之乐也,亦未之不乐也。

20 Sometimes, I really doubt if there is a joyful feeling and sorrowful feeling in the world. Truly speaking, I think that a sound, tranquil and peaceful life is the real joy without side effect. Common people, however, think that it is boring, lonely, vacant, extremely hard and painful life.

有时我真怀疑,这世上是否真的有快乐与不快乐这样的感觉。老实说,我认为平静无波、安稳、沉静的生活才是真正没有后遗症的快乐。然而世人却听不进去,认为那是无聊、寂寞、空虚与极其难过的痛苦生活。

果有乐无有哉?吾以无为诚乐矣,又俗之所大苦也。

21 Alas! What can I do?

! 既然如此,那我又有什么可说的呢?

22 This possibly is the difference between the common people and men of practice.

这大概就是修行人与一般人之间的差别吧!

故曰:「忠不听,蹲循勿争。」故夫子争之以残其形;不争,名亦不成。诚有善无有哉今俗之所为与其所乐,吾又未知乐之果乐邪?果不乐邪?

23 To the men of practice, there is no joy in the utmost joy and no praise in the utmost praise. Safe and peace are bliss. If Heaven forgot you, you would live for longer time. If government forgot you, you would pay less tax and do fewer services. If you reduced the association with the malfeasant, you would be exploited less. The time when nobody notices you mostly is nice.

对修行的人言「至乐无乐至誉无誉」,平安就是福。老天忘记你,你就活久点儿。政府忘记你,你就少缴些税,少出些劳役。少与那些贪官污吏接触,你就少被剥层皮。没人理会的大部份时间都是好的。

故曰:「至乐无乐至誉无誉。」天下是非果未可定也
