 道德经演义(四十四)

  

Fame or one’s own self, which does one love more?

 名与身孰亲?

 

 One’s own self or material goods, which has more worth?

 身与货孰多?

 

 Loss of self or possession of goods, which is the greater evil?

 得与亡孰病?

 

 Therefore: he who loves most spends most; he who hoards much loses much.

 甚爱必大费; 多藏必厚亡。

 

 The contented man meets no disrace; who knows when to stop runs into no danger—he can long    endure.

 故知足不辱,知止不殆,可以长久。



Tree on Hill (8) (1-17)(44。1)

庄子演义外篇山木(八)(1-17)(44。1)

1 Chuang Tzu someday toured near a chestnut garden in Diaoling.

庄子有一天到雕陵私人栗园附近去游玩。

2 Attracted by a bird flying from south, he unwarily walked into the chestnut garden.

他被一只从南方飞来的大鸟所吸引,不经意地走进了栗园里。

3 Looking up at the weird bird, he found that the bird’s wings were seven feet in width when stretching fully and its eyes were one inch in diameter. When the bird passed him, its wing brushed his forehead unwittingly. At last, the bird perched on a branch of a chestnut tree.

庄子抬头看着这只怪鸟。他发觉这只鸟的翅膀伸展开时竟有七尺长,眼睛好大,足足有一寸宽。当这只鸟飞过他身边时,不知怎地,翅膀竟然刮到了他的前额。最后这只怪鸟,就停歇在一颗栗树的枝头上。

庄周游于雕陵之樊,睹一异鹊自南方来者。翼广七尺,目大运寸,感周之颡,而集于栗林。

4 Watching the bird, he thought what kind a bird it was. It had so long wings but it didn’t fly, perching idly. It had so big eyes but it was not able to see the surrounding, brushing my forehead carelessly.

庄子看着这只怪鸟,心中想到,这到底是一只什么样的鸟啊!牠有那么长的翅膀,却不飞翔,懒懒地站在枝头上。有这么大的眼睛,却不看清环境,粗心大意地刮到我的额头。

5 Chuang Tzu became more interested in the bird.

想到这里,庄子想了解这只鸟的兴趣因而更浓厚了。

6 With a sling in one hand and the lip of his robe held in the other hand, he followed the bird to go deep into the garden.

他一只手提着自己长袍的下襬,一只手拿着弹弓,紧跟着这只鸟儿深入了栗园之中。

庄周曰:「此何鸟哉!翼殷不逝,目大不睹。」蹇裳躩步,执弹而留之。

7 Standing soundly, Chuang Tzu found that there was a cicada perching peacefully in the shadow of branches. It sang in high pitch, and was oblivious of itself.

庄子站定后,他发现在树枝的阴暗处,有一只蝉,安详地歇在那儿,高声地吟唱着,己达到忘我的境界。

8 There was a mantis behind the cicada. Raising high its foreleg, it tried to prey the cicada under the cover of leaves.

在蝉的身后,有一只螳螂,正高高地举起前脚,利用树叶的掩护,等待机会要捕捉那只蝉。

9 The mantis focused too much on its prey and neglected a bird behind staring covetously at it.

这只螳螂太专注在牠的猎物上,因而忽略了,有一只鸟在其身后,正虎视眈眈地注视着牠。

10 The bird focused its entire mind on preying — the mantis, neglecting a man who was ready to shoot it down with sling.

当然,这只鸟儿也因为太专注在牠的猎物--螳螂--身上,而忘记了树下另有一位仁兄,正拿着弹弓,随时准备将牠射下。

睹一蝉,方得美荫而忘其身。螳螂执翳而搏之,见得而忘形;异鹊从而利之,见利而忘其真。

11 Chuang Tzu under the tree comprehended suddenly that this is the biological chain, one eating another.

庄子在树下看到了这样的景象,忽然警觉到,这就是生物的食物链,物物相扣,一物克一物。

12 Then the guardian of the garden found Chuang Tzu with sling in hand and mistook him as a thief who intended to sneak chestnut. Hence, guardian shouted at him with abuse. Throwing off sling, Chuang Tzu had to run out of the garden.

这时看守栗园的人,发现庄子站在园里,手拿弹弓,以为他是偷采栗子的窃贼。因此破口大骂。庄子迅速的将弹弓丢在地上,狼狈地跑出栗园。

庄周怵然曰:「噫!物固相累,二类相召也。」捐弹而反走,虞人逐而谇之。

13 After returning to home, he sank into sullenness for three days, willing to go nowhere.

庄子回家后,闷闷不乐地呆了三天,那儿也不想去。

庄周反入,三日不庭。

14 Linqie, Chuang Tzu’s disciple watched him and found the change of his mood. He asked Chuang Tzu, “Why do you feel sullen and close yourself in the room? What has happened on earth?”

庄子的徒弟蔺且在一旁观察,发觉了老师的情绪上的变化,因此他问庄子: 「为什么您这几天一直都将自己关在屋子里,闷闷不乐的,是不是发生了什么事了? 」

蔺且从而问之,「夫子何为顷间甚不庭乎?」

15 Chuang Tzu said, “I focus too much on the world of material. I expect too much worldly desire so that I lose myself, forgetting there are self-nature, Buddha-nature, Qi, calmness and refinement in my deeper heart.

庄子说: 「我对物质世界的东西太专注了,对世俗的欲望太高了,因而迷失了自己,忽略了内心还有自性,佛性,拙火,妙用,以及气的存在。

16 It is just like that we forget there is limpid water in the deep place of a lake when we see the turbid stream.

就像我们留心观看浑浊的溪水,而忘记了在湖之深处,还有清澈的湖水。

17 The senior even told me that we must do in Rome as Rome does. I neglected the taboo of being in a chestnut garden when I toured in Diaoling. The low-flying bird brushing my forehead attracted my attention for which the bird almost was killed. The bird’s action resulted from focusing too much on the mantis on the tree. I was mistaken as a thief by the guardian. How can I become happy?”

前辈们曾经告诉我,入境问俗的道理。我到雕陵游玩,一时疏忽,忘记了栗园中瓜田李下的忌讳。当那只鸟儿低飞时,碰触到了我的前额,这才引起我的注意,也差点为牠引来杀身之祸。那只鸟儿的这种作为,也是因为太专注于树上的螳螂所致。至于我,却被栗园看守人误当成小偷来看待,你说,我怎么还能快乐得起来呢?」

庄周曰:「吾守形而忘身,观于浊水而迷于清渊。且吾闻诸夫子曰:『入其俗,从其俗。』今吾游于雕陵而忘吾身,异鹊感吾颡,游于栗林而忘真。栗林虞人以吾为戮,吾所以不庭也。」

1 In childhood, we liked catching dragonfly. The way was: catch a small dragonfly, behead it and stick its body on one end of a grass; we hold the other end of the grass and whirl. It is something like fishing. We use the small dragonfly as bait to fish the big one.

 

 小时候我们喜欢玩捉蜻蜓的游戏。方法是: 先捉一只小蜻蜓,将其头拿掉后再将牠串在一根草的顶端,然后持着该草的另一端轻轻的打着圈子。其原理与钓鱼颇为类似。只不过我们是利用小蜻蜓的身子来充当诱饵,利用它来钓大蜻蜓。

2 When we whirled the grass in bush, big dragonfly hovered and tried to catch the small one on grass. Then we could catch the big one easily.

 

 当我们在草丛中摇晃着串着小蜻蜓的草杆时,大蜻蜓就会飞上来捕捉串在草头上的小蜻蜓,就这样,这只大蜻蜓就成为了我们的囊中物了。

3 The big dragonfly was caught because it takes action under a condition it does not know very well.

 

 大蜻蜓之所以送了命,原因是牠在尚未了解真实情况下,贸然采取行动所致。

 

4 If we held the grass still, the big dragonfly saw the obvious trap and it wouldn’t dash to it regardless of its safety.

 

 如果,我们拿着一端插着小蜻蜓的草在手上,而不去摇晃它,那么,大蜻蜓就能看得清楚,也明白这其实是一个陷阱,牠也就不会如此白白地送命了。

 

5 In this chapter ChuangTzu quoted “ask local custom and follow it”. Its true meaning is that as we enter into an environment, we should investigate around carefully and learn well about all things and then, take action accordingly. Thus we would not neglect potential crises or miss the valuable chance.

 

 庄子在这篇文章里提出了 “入其俗,从其俗”。这句话。他的意思是,当我们到达了一个新的环境之后,一定要用心观察周遭之情况,彻底认清环境中的一切现象,然后再采取配套行动; 这样才不至于疏忽了潜在的危机,或因此而错过了宝贵的机会。
