A Man and His Pigeons

Liang Jan was from a wealthy family. Ever since he was a child, he had been fond of pigeons. He bred many kinds of pigeons at home, and bought as many books about pigeons as he could, and studied them very carefully. Since he did not have to work, he concentrated on his studies of pigeons. He hired carpenters to build hundreds of small wooden boxes for his birds to rest, and personally fed the birds every day. As he had spent so much time on the birds, gradually he became an expert of pigeons. He even knew how to prevent and cure the pigeons' diseases.

When Liang Jan reached the marriage age, his parents arranged for a girl to be his wife. After marriage, Liang Jan still spent most of his time with the birds. That made his wife very unhappy. Yet she could do nothing to stop him from going to the birds all the time. When they had children, his wife complained that he treasured his pigeons more than his children. Liang Jan replied that his children had their mother, grandparents and servants to watch over them, but that his pigeons had nobody but him to take care of them. The explanation did not satisfy his wife, but she could not dissipate his love for the birds either.

After his parents died, Liang Jan spent even more time with the birds. Whenever he heard that a pigeon show would be held at a certain place on a certain date, no matter how far it was, he would go. His wife complained that if she had not had two sons with him, she might have considered filing for divorce.

A year later, an epidemic hit the area and his wife died. Liang Jan decided not to remarry. He hired two nannies to take care of his children.

One day, Liang Jan went to attend a pigeon show in a place hundred of miles away from his home. He took two pigeons with him. After the show, he let his birds fly home by themselves while he planned to take the opportunity to visit a relative who lived in that area.

While he traveled along a mountain road toward the relative's home, he saw a small pure black pigeon resting by the roadside. He immediately recognized that it was a rare breed. He approached the bird cautiously. As he walked a little closer, the bird began to fly away, then, stopped a few feet ahead. When Liang Jan tried to walk a little closer, the bird would again fly a short distance then wait. It seemed as if the pigeon was trying to lead him somewhere. Liang Jan patiently followed the bird and finally reached a clearing by a forest.

There, Liang Jan was surprised to find hundreds of pigeons in the woods and a small house behind the trees. The small black pigeon disappeared, and an old man in a long black garment came out of the house to greet him. The man invited Liang Jan to enter his house. They exchanged names. The man's name was Gu Gang. He introduced himself as a farmer, as well as the owner of all the pigeons in the area. He introduced Liang Jan to his wife and his daughter, a pretty young woman in her late teens.

When Liang Jan told the family that he also owned hundreds of pigeons, he soon became a friend of the host and hostess in the house. They conversed happily about pigeons. It seemed that Liang Jan had more knowledge than the family as far as how to take care of the pigeons.

After this conversation, Gu Gang took Liang Jan out and walked into the woods. Gu Gang whistled and countless pigeons flew to him, some even perching upon his hat, arms, and shoulders. The birds happily cooed as if they wanted to tell their master what they had seen or done. Gu Gang gently touched each bird with his hands like a kind grandfather patting his grandchildren.

Liang Jan noticed that Gu Gang had more rare breeds than he had. After a while, Gu Gang told his birds to be quiet and go away as he must care for his guest. Then all the birds flew back to the woods obediently.

Gu Gang asked Liang Jan, "Have you noticed some of my birds are very sick? I really don't know what is wrong with them or how to improve their health. I would appreciate it very much if you could give me your advice."

Liang Jan said, "According to the books I have researched, I think some of your birds have chronic respiratory disease. I know how to make the right herbal remedy to cure it, but it'll take several days to make it."

"Could you stay with us and help us make the remedy?" Gu Gang asked.

Since he did not have to hurry back, Liang Jan replied, "Okay. I'll stay here to help you."

Every day, Liang Jan would teach Gu Gang's daughter, Gu Wan, how to make the necessary medicines for their pigeons. Since Liang Jan's knowledge about the birds was so profound, he soon won Gu Wan's respect. With daily close contact, gradually, the respect turned into love. The couple fell in love without even realizing it. Liang Jan felt great with Gu Wan by his side, and she felt happy working with him, too.

Liang Jan recalled his first marriage, an arranged one by his parents. His previous wife had never liked his pigeons, even hated them, as she felt he always spent too much time on them. Gu Wan was different. She loved the pigeons as much as he did. As his life was about pigeons, he realized that he could not live happily with another woman if she could not share this love of pigeons with him. That was the reason why after his wife's death he did not want to remarry.

Now Gu Wan's love of the pigeons made him change his mind. After deep thought for several nights, he decided to court Gu Wan. One evening after supper, he formally made a marriage proposal to Gu Wan in front of her parents.

Gu Gang and his wife accepted the proposal immediately, while Gu Wan blushed, hanging her head without saying a word. When her mother asked her if she also agreed to the marriage proposal, she replied shyly that it was totally up to her parents.

A simple wedding ceremony was soon held in the woods, with Gu Gang and his wife as well as their pigeons watching as witnesses.

When Liang Jan and Gu Wan had made enough remedies to cure the sick pigeons, Liang Jan took Gu Wan home. He introduced his bride to his two sons and servants and happily surprised every one of them.

As a stepmother, Gu Wan tried hard to befriend the two boys. She taught them how to approach and feed the pigeons. Soon she and her stepsons got along very well and the boys became fond of the birds, too. It made Liang Jan very happy.

One day, when Liang Jan and Gu Wan were sitting and talking in their living room, a strange pigeon flew into the room through the open window. Gu Wan immediately recognized that it was one of her parents' birds. She held the bird in her hand and found a small note bound on one of the bird's legs. It was a message from her mother saying that her father was seriously ill. Liang Jan hastily accompanied his wife back to the mountain.

When they reached Gu Wan's parents' home, they were relieved to find that Gu Gang had almost recovered from his illness. From that time on, they frequently sent messages to each other with their pigeons flying between the two places. The smart birds always delivered the messages faithfully.

Years later, Gu Gang died. When Liang Jan and Gu Wan got the sad news from a pigeon's note, they rushed back to the mountain. The old man's dead body had already been laid inside a wooden coffin in the hall. Gu Wan was so distressed that she held her mother's hands crying sorrowfully without stopping. Suddenly, Gu Wan fainted. Liang Jan quickly moved her to the bedroom. When Gu Wan recovered, her mother sat by her side. The two women hugged each other without saying a word. Liang Jan went back to the hall alone, planning to burn the incenses for the dead according to the Chinese tradition.

While Liang Jan was burning the incenses by the coffin, he accidentally touched the cover of the wooden coffin and made it slide to one side. Standing up, he tried to put the cover back to its proper position. Suddenly, he was shocked to discover that it was not Gu Gang's body, but a dead black pigeon lying at the bottom of coffin. Just at this moment, Gu Wan and her mother returned to the hall.

Noticing what he had found, Gu Wan quickly said to Liang Jan with tears on her face, "I have to admit to you. We are not humans. We are pigeons."

Liang Jan hugged her tightly in his arms, "I don't care who you are. All I know is that you are my dear wife, and your parents are my parents-in-law."

Maybe because the death of her husband shocked her too much, within a few days, Gu Wan's mother died, as well.

The sudden death of both her parents made Gu Wan extremely depressed. After returning to their home, she often sat alone in a room in meditation. She told Liang Jan that the only way to permanently get rid of the torture of life and death would be to become immortal.

"I heard of a process how to follow to achieve immortality. Let's try it," she said to him.

From the next day on, the husband and wife began to work together closely, aiming at the goal of becoming immortals.

After Liang Jan's elder son got married, Liang Jan told his children that he and Gu Wan had decided to move to the house where Gu Wan and her parents used to live. Actually, they just wanted to escape the normal activities in the human world in order to concentrate on becoming immortal.

Since they did not return to their home the following year as they had promised to their children, Liang Jan's two sons went to the mountain to find them. They found the house, but could not find their father and stepmother. The two young men looked everywhere, but could find no trace of them. They returned home wondering where their parents might have gone.

Several years later, Liang Jan's younger son was preparing to get married. On the wedding eve, the two brothers missed their father and stepmother very much. The elder son said to his younger brother that if their father and stepmother were there, they would be very happy, too.

Suddenly, two black pigeons flew into the family's hall. As the family tried to chase the birds out, the pigeons turned into Liang Jan and Gu Wan. They told the sons that they were coming home to take charge of the wedding ceremony.

After the younger son's marriage, Liang Jan and Gu Wan turned into pigeons again and flew into the sky and soon disappeared. After that, the senior couple never returned home again.
