        Enjoy the Big Opera

My parents had brought me to see a big opera when I was 4 or 5 years old. In that time, Peking Opera was called “Big Opera”. The theatre for Big Opera in Hangzhou was constructed into two storeys.   Both upper and lower storey was very crowded, noisy and hot.

Before the performance, there was always a long section of beating drums and gongs.  It sounded even more bustling, but the noise of speaking calmed down.

At that time, there was no microphone.  The actor or actress had to sing loudly with their own ability.  After a time of singing, someone the backstage would bring a small teapot to the actor or actress to moisten the throat.  They only took a little, fearing not to drink too much.

At the break of performance, the theatre became noisy again.  There were peddlers shuttling back and forth to sell tea, dried bean curd and other foods. There was a round hole on the armrest of every person’s chair for placing a teacup.  Some attendants peddled hot towels. It needed two or three attendants to take a concerted action to do this. One attendant took a twisted hot towel from the steamer at the corner of the lower storey and threw it across the whole space of the theatre to reach the attendant in the other side, or threw the towel to the attendant on the upper storey. He threw it again to the third attendant and passed it on to the audience.

Because the delivery of towel was finished in only few seconds, the towel was still hot enough so it always burned hands when it was passed to the audience.  It was really a unique skill and should be relatively hygienic.
