Title: Love, Service and Culture

Date: 9 April 09 (TTC DP Eucharist/Maundy Thurs)

Here at TTC we are very serious about contextualizing the gospel – that is, expressing it in ways that are appropriate for Asian cultures.

We especially encourage the contextualization of worship.

In our own chapel services, for instance, we have used Indonesian songs such as “Jalo ma Tuhan,” Chinese instruments such as the er-hu, and Asian gestures such as greeting one another by touching the ends of folded hands.

But the contextualization of worship is more than a gimmick to make worship interesting.

Contextualization is mandated by the gospel itself.

God’s Incarnation did not result in a non-descript, androgynous robot.

Rather, the “Word became flesh” in Jesus, the itinerant Galilean rabbi of the first-century, who observed the social and religious customs of his people, such as the Passover, and washing feet.

He also shared stories that reflected his social milieu.

By drawing on his own culture, Jesus shared his vision of the kingdom of God.

His life and teaching therefore highlight the importance of proclaiming the Gospel in culturally relevant ways.

Yet Jesus was no slave to his culture.

On the night of his betrayal, when he celebrated a meal with his 12 closest disciples, he did the culturally unthinkable by washing their feet.

Jesus – someone called by the reverential terms “Teacher and Lord” – performed a menial task on persons well beneath him on the social ladder!

Undoubtedly, respectable people like priests, elders, and Pharisees would have been horrified!

We must remember, of course, that Jesus washed his disciples’ feet in order to show that true love means serving others.

For Jesus, service meant not only pouring water on people’s feet, but also pouring out his life blood on the Cross.

For the sake of revealing God’s cross-shaped love, Jesus practiced the cultural custom of washing feet in a new and shocking way.

He thereby demonstrated that love and service have priority over culture.

In a few minutes, we will follow Jesus’ command to wash feet.

Faculty and Student Council representatives will come forward to wash each other’s feet.

Family groups have been invited to wash feet during their time together later today.

Of course, we are doing much more than re-enacting the Maundy Thursday Gospel Lesson.

We are practicing mutual love in a tangible, tactile way so that it sinks deeply into our souls and becomes part of us.

Think of foot washing this way: just as we wear ashes on our heads to produce repentance on Ash Wednesday, so we wash feet on Maundy Thursday to inspire humility and service.

Or, just as we are fed at the Communion Table so that we learn to feed others with God’s love, so we wash feet to learn the way of service.

In practicing this unusual, apparently out-dated gesture of washing feet, we declare to ourselves and the world that we will not be slaves to the world’s ideals of fashion, efficiency and decency.

We will give love and service priority over culture, just as Jesus did.

Indeed, the values of service and looking to the good of others should characterize the church’s engagement with culture.

This is especially true when it comes to technology.

Both Asian and Western cultures place a high value on technological progress.

They see advancements in technology as inherently good.

But few Asians or Westerners bother to ask whether a particular technology serves the good of all people or whether it serves them responsibly.

We Christians, however, should constantly be challenging the world about these things.

We might ask whether human reproductive technology is being used and administered rightly if it allows multiple births to families that are already large!

We might ask whether surveillance technology that videos peoples’ movements -- whether they want this or not -- really serves the public interest.

We might ask whether these and other technologies are doing anything more than enriching the pockets of the industries that develop and promote them.

As disciples of the Great Foot Washer, we need to hold governments accountable to the ethic of serving the common good and whole societies accountable to the ethic of using technology in ways that are just and loving.

So as we wash feet today, let us be “washed” by the Lord’s attitude of loving service.

Let us put the love of the gospel first – even as we seek to contextualize the gospel.

May the world know us as a people who are sometimes countercultural, but who are this way for the sake of love.

Amen.

I now invite the faculty and student council representatives to come forward for the footwashing.
