                                                     Have     Dream

The Christmas Eve of 2004 was a sleepless night for me.
When I was reading my favorite Chinese National Geography that night, I was deeply touched by “Is ShiMen Kan a Purgatory or Holy Land”, an article written  by Ms. Shen Hong from the Sociology Institute of China Academy of Social Science.  I kept reading from time to time, tears bathing over my face.  It was the first time that I knew the history of Miao ethnic group; the first time I knew Samuel Pollard, an international friend like Dr.Bethune, who came to china thousands of miles afar and dedicated his life and love to Chinese people. Samuel Pollard came to china in 22-years-old and lived nearly 30 years in ShiMen Kan, Weining of Guizhou province of the Southwest barren area. His life was full of legendary stories, devoting spirit and hero manner. He was both a priest and doctor. As far as his achievement is concerned in Shimen Kan, there are many Firsts in historical documents:
He was the first man who advocated bilingual education in china, preceded with coeducation in contemporary Chinese history; he arranged Miao words; established the first Miao ethnic primary school; brought up the first PhD in Miao ethnic history; and he set up the first west medicine hospital in WuMeng mountainous area; he also found the early Lepra Hospital in China…. In 1915, when the typhoid fever overspread ShiMen Kan, Samuel Pollard  was infected in his nursing of his sick students and country fellows. He left medicine to cure the other people and died later on his duties. Samuel Pollard’s character and spirit originated great social influence.
Samuel Pollard was a disciple, and more an outstanding educationalist.

A century later, the seedling planted by Samuel Pollard has grown into a towering tree now. The time passes, and love never stops. After that night, some dream has took root in my heart.
I have a dream that one day there will be a Samuel Pollard school in the beautiful but poor land of western Hunan, where the poverty-stricken children can learn to write and read free of charge. They will not only study on Literature, Math, but also on Painting and Music; they will not only have Physical and Kongfu training, but also accept traditional culture and Etiquette cultivation. They will not only speak standard Madarin, but also fluent English. When they grow up, they are not only the social elites, but also our national backbone.
I have a dream that one day I I go to Shimenkan to pay my reverence to Mr. Samuel Pollard, to offer beautiful flowers to him, and to visit those respectable compatriots. I dream that there will have many Samuel Pollard school in the poor and remote mountainous areas of China. in those schools, these poor children there can receive first-class education.
I have a dream that one day...............

PS:   In the deep fall, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China was was extraordinarily beautiful, with the great golden leaves flaked down from Ginkgo trees. With my newly-tailored Chinese dress Chipau, and The Bioragraphy of Samucl Pollard on hand, I took these photos for memorial.
