  The Shepherd-Boy and the Wolf

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A shepherd-boy was watching a flock of sheep near his village (1). He felt very bored. He cried out to the village: “Wolf! Wolf!” though there was no wolf at all. When his neighbors came to help him, he laughed at them for their pains.

He repeated this trick four times and his neighbors were cheated four times.

The wolf however did truly come at last. The shepherd-boy shouted in a pain of terror: “Wolf! Wolf! Do come and help me; the wolf is killing the sheep,” but no one paid any attention to his cries, nor did anyone give him any assistance 2. The wolf had no cause of fear and took it easily, and finally destroyed the whole flock.

There is no believing a liar, even when he speaks the truth.

Notes:

1.       A shepherd-boy was watching a flock of sheep…

She was tending a large flock of geese.(她正在看一大群鹅)/ This was like watching a flock of cattle.(这就像是看着一群牛羊一样。)

2.       …no one paid any attention to his cries, nor did anyone give him any assistance.

He can’t do it; nor can I, nor can you, nor can anybody.(他不能;我也不能;你也不能;谁都不能。)
