A squirrel was leaping from  limb to limb (1), and fell directly upon a sleeping wolf. The wolf jumped up, and was going to devour him. But the squirrel begged the wolf to let him go.

The wolf said, “All right, I will let you go on condition that (2) you must tell me why you squirrels are always so happy. I am always melancholy; but I see you playing and leaping all the time in the trees.”

The squirrel said, “Let me go first, and then I will tell you; but now I am afraid of you.”

The wolf let him go, and the squirrel leaped up into a tree, and from there it said, You are melancholy because you are bad. Wickedness consumes your heart. But we are happy because we are good, and do no one any harm.”

Notes:

1.       A squirrel was leaping from  limb to limb….

比如:from morning to night (从早到晚)/ from house to house (挨家逐户) / day and night (日日夜夜)/ arm in arm (手挽手)/ shoulder to shoulder (肩并肩)。

2.       …I will let you go on condition that (2) you must tell me…

句中的短语on (upon) condition that的意

You can use

my car on condition that you return it
