A jackdaw felt very hungry and started to look for food. On the left side of a small river he found a fig-tree, upon which he seated himself (1).

The tree had produced some fruit entirely out of season. The jackdaw waited patiently in the hope the figs would ripen.

Quite a few days passed he was still waiting there on the fig-tree. A fox saw him sitting so long and knew what he was waiting for (2). The fox said to him with great sympathy:

“Sir, you are indeed sadly deceiving yourself. You are indulging a hope strong enough to cheat you, but it will never reward you with enjoyment.”

Notes:

1.       …he found a fig-tree, upon which he seated himself…

句中的关系代词which引导一个定语从句,其先行词是fig-treeupon which即是upon the fig-tree(在无花果树上)。 This is the book you are looking for. = This is the book for which you are looking.(这是你在找的那本书。)

2.       A fox saw him sitting so long and knew what  he was waiting for…

句中的关系代词what具有先行词和关系代词的双重作用,即:what = the thing (things) which。 What ( = The thing which) has been done cannot be undone.
