A fox felt very good about himself (1) and invited a crane as his distinguished guest. The fox was a tight-handed fellow. He only prepared some soup made of beans (2). Nothing else.

The crane arrived on time. The fox poured out the soup into a broad flat stone dish and said to the crane: “Please help yourself!”

The soup fell out of the long bill of the crane at every mouthful, and he got very angry for not being able to eat, but the fox felt greatly amused.

Sometime later, the crane, in his turn, asked the fox to dine with him. The crane and the fox sat facing each other, and then the crane set between them two a flask with a long narrow mouth, so that he could easily put his neck into the flask and enjoy its contents at his leisure.

The fox was unable to taste it at all, but he could say nothing for the crane was doing after the fashion of his own hospitality.

Notes:

1.        A fox felt very good about himself…

比如:to feel sad(感到悲哀) / to feel good(感觉良好) / to feel cold (感觉冷)/ to feel hot(感觉热)/ to feel ill (感到不舒服)

2.        He only prepared some soup made of beans.

句中的过去分词短语made of beans作后置定语,修饰前面的soupTo be made

(out) of 表示“用什么制造”,强调发生的是物理变化;to be made fromto be

The table is made out of wood. / Steel is made from iron.

The bread is made with water, sugar, flour and yeast.(面包是
