A fox was running for her skin before the hounds. The fox came across a woodcutter who was felling an oak. She begged him to show her a safe hiding-place. The woodcutter advised her to take shelter in his own hut. The fox crept in, and hid herself in a corner.

In a few minutes the huntsman came up, with his hounds. He asked the woodcutter if he had seen the fox (1).

He said loudly that he had not seen the fox, and yet pointed, all the time he was speaking, to the hut (2)where the fox lay hid.

The huntsman took no notice of the signs, but, believing his words, hastened forward in the chase.

As soon as they were well away, the fox was to depart without saying anything to the woodcutter. Therefore, he called to her and reproached her, saying: “You are an ungrateful fellow, you owe your life to me, and yet you leave me without a word of thanks.”

The fox replied: “Indeed, I should have thanked you very much if your deeds had been as good as your words, and if your hands had not been traitors to your speech.”

Notes:

1.       He asked the woodcutter if he had seen the fox.

2.       …pointed, all the time he was speaking, to the hut…
