Maxwell got his degree in 1854 but he decided to stay on to study at Cambridge. His studies led to his invention of a color top to demonstrate that suitable combinations of the three primary colors, red, green, and blue (1), could produce practically every color imaginable.

Maxwell’s scientific paper describing this investigation is the basis for the color in television. All colors of this modern device are produced by combination of red, green and blue. His studies on color won the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society.

Maxwell’s father was ailing and Maxwell wished to return to Scotland to be close at hand. (3) He obtained the chair of science department of a college, but unhappily his father died a few days before he was to start this new position.

The average student did not benefit very much from Professor Maxwell’s instructions. (4) Only the bright ones were able to follow his teaching.

But Maxwell did profit from his position. He found his wife there, the daughter of the head of the college. He wrote to his aunt, “She is not mathematic, but there are other things beside that, and she certainly won’t interfere with mathematics.” These few lines disclose the good humor and pleasantness of this great genius.

Maxwell had done some original and important work on the movements of gases. His mathematical analysis and his physical model of the movement and collisions of particles of gas have stood the test of time and are still in use despite the many changes that modern science has brought. But Maxwell’s work in the theory of electricity and magnetism far overshadows his other work.

1.       …the three primary colors, red, green, and blue…

2.       His studies on color won the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society.

Have you read On Practice ? / This is a book about Mark Twain. / This is a book on Mark Twain.

3.       …Maxwell wished to return to Scotland to be close at hand.

句子中的英语习惯用语close at hand意思和near in distance or time差不多,表示“就在眼前,在身边”。 Summer is close at hand. / My aunt lives close at hand.

4.       The average student did not benefit very much from Professor Maxwell’s instructions.

We benefit greatly by this frank talk. / He thought he would benefit from going to school.
