On a hot summer day, when the great heat induced a general thirst, a lion and a boar came at the same moment to a small well to drink.

They fiercely disputed which of them should drink first, and were soon engaged in the agonies of a mortal combat (1).

On their stopping on a sudden to take breath for the fiercer renewal of the strife, they saw some vultures waiting in the distance to feast on the one which should fall first.

They at once made up their quarrel (2), saying , “It is better for us to make friends, than to become the food of crows or vultures.”

Notes:

1.       They fiercely … were soon engaged in the agonies of a mortal combat.

The old lady engaged herself in making clothes for her neighbors’ children..(这位老太太正在给邻居的小孩做衣服。)

2.       They at once made up their quarrel…

A car is made up of many different parts.(汽车由许多不同的部件组成。) / He made up the prescription.(他照处方药。)/ She made up missed lessons.(她课。)/ The whole story is made up.(整个故事是虚构的。)/ Clowns made up before the show.(演出前,小丑们化装。)/ He made up the marriage.(他安排婚事。)/ A fishing boat made up to us.(一条渔船近我们。)
