A lion was old and weak and could not get food by force. He resolved to play some tricks instead (1)

He stayed in his den, lying down there, and pretended to be sick. He took care that his sickness should be publicly known.

The beasts expressed their sorrow, and came one by one to his den to visit him, when the lion devoured them.

After many of the beasts had thus disappeared, the fox discovered the trick, and presenting himself to the lion, stood on the outside of the cave, at a respectful distance, and asked of his how he did.

The lion replied, “I am alright. But why do you stand outside? Please come in and talk with me.”

The fox said in reply, “No, thank you. I notice that there are many prints of feet entering your cave, but I see no trace of any returning.”

He is wise who is warned by the misfortunes of others. (2)

Notes:

1.        He resolved to play some tricks instead.

We resolved to visit Europe at least once a year. / That resolved him to it. / The prism resolved the light into a play of color. / His resentment resolved itself into resignation.

2.        He is wise who is warned by the misfortunes of others.
