Camels are desert animals. They have been working for man (1) for more than 3,000 years.

Men of Arabia first caught this animal and put it to work. This animal is called the Arabian camel, a long-legged beast with one large hump on its back. It could cross hot deserts without needing much water and carry heavy loads without tiring.

The two-humped camel of central Asia was also domesticated long ago. It is sturdier than the Arabian one and can carry heavier loads. During the winter, the brownish hair is thick and long for protection from the cold nights. It sheds its hair in patches in the spring (2), as the weather warms up.

Camels are hornless hoofed mammals. Their hoofs are like leathery pads. Their toes spread apart when they walk on sand or snow. They are called “ships of the desert,” because they sway from side to side when they walk and carry great loads. They must kneel for riders to get on because they stand seven feet high at the shoulder.

Camels usually protest by whining, hissing, spitting, and trying to bite and kick the riders. A special breed of Arabian camel, the dromedary, has been developed for riding and racing.

This camel has longer legs and weighs less than a regular “baggage” camel. It can run at speeds up to ten miles per hour (3).

A camel’s hump is a large deposit of fat. A camel’s body uses up the fat when plant food is not available (4) during long desert treks.

People used to think that water, too, was stored in the hump. But scientists discovered that camels do not sweat so much as other mammals. So water, which is stored in the body tissues and in pouches in the stomach, is used very slowly.

Camels are now being replaced by cars, trucks, and airplanes. But they are still used by some people of northern Africa and Asia for carrying loads and for their hides, hair, bones, meat, and milk. A soft fabric can be woven from camel hair.

Relatives of the camel are important to the Indians of mountain countries in South America.

The llama was domesticated long ago as a beast of burden. The Inca Indians used it to carry metal ores from mines in the mountains. It has long white or brown hair, which the Indians today use to make rope.

The dark-colored alpaca has even longer hair, which is exported all over the world and made into fabric. The wool worn by Inca kings was woven from the very soft, fine hair of the wild vicuna that is still used today.

The guanaco is the tallest of the South American camel-like animals. The hair of a guanaco is too stiff to be useful.

1.       They have been working for man …

再比如:Man will conquer nature. Man is said to be stronger than woman.

2.       It sheds its hair in patches in the spring…

They came here in pairs. / The students entered the hall in a single file.

3.       It can run at speeds up to ten miles per hour.

The airplane flew at a speed of 500 miles per hour.

4.       …when plant food is not available…

The book is available for reference. / The season ticket is available for three months. / The swimming pool is available for the regular members of the club.

The serum is available to the general public.
